Albinism is a rare genetic condition that inhibits the production of melanin, or pigmentation, in the skin and hair. People born with albinism are unusually susceptible to sunburn, melanoma, and a range of other health issues that are generally connected to excessive exposure to the sun.

The statements above, if true, provide the most support for which of the following conclusions?

A)People born with albinism develop other biological protections against melanoma and other sun-related health issues.
B)Humans with a high production of melanin can easily ignore health issues related to exposure to the sun.
C)When a non-albino person gets sunburn, the amount of melanin produced by that person decreases.
D)In humans, melanin plays a role in protecting the skin from developing sunburn and other sun-related ailments.
E)It is not possible for a person born with albinism to adopt other artificial protective measures against excessive exposure to the sun.

Albinism is a rare genetic condition that inhibits the production of melanin, or pigmentation, in the skin and hair. People born with albinism are unusually susceptible to sunburn, melanoma, and a range of other health issues that are generally connected to excessive exposure to the sun.

The argument lack the gap that the production of melanin can prevent sunburn, melanoma, and a range of other health issues (that are generally connected to excessive exposure to the sun.)

Only the debatable answer is between B and D

B)Humans with a high production of melanin can easily ignore health issues related to exposure to the sun.

D)In humans, melanin plays a role in protecting the skin from developing sunburn and other sun-related ailments.

Choice D is exactly the gap between in the argument. So, this is the correct one. Choice B wrong partly because it is too extreme.

Only D is properly decipherable from the premises. Other options are either too extreme or are beyond the scope of the argument.

Can anyone let me know that if two events are occurring simultaneously, then is it really necessary that one event has to be the cause of the other?
I don't think so and D is absolutely doing the same thing.
My take B.

My take B.

You are ABSOLUTELY correct in your assessment that correlation is not causation. But i will not go so far as to say that B is correct.
Most people forget that when we come to the gmat world, we are supposed to leave our real world knowledge outside the door.

Infact none of the answers are correct.

The argument in a gist is : -

Albinism inhibits production of melanin.
People born with albinism are unusually susceptible to health issues that are connected to sun burn.

From a GMAT argument perspective - The ARGUMENT DOES NOT SAY that melanin has ANYTHING to do with sun burn.

Hence one cannot reasonably conclude anything from the argument other than -

People born with Albinism have little or no quantity of melanin in their system.

Marcab this will be the first option i ll eliminate since the options talks about the health issues from high production of melanin from exposure to sun.

My take B.

(B) is not correct. The argument says that people born with albinism are unusually susceptible to issues connected to excessive exposure to the sun. It doesn't say that others are not susceptible. You are assuming here that high production of melanin completely protects people from sun related ailments. This is one step further than (D). You say (D) is not correct because two events occurring simultaneously does not mean one causes the other. But when saying that answer is B, you are assuming exactly that and more.

As for (D), I may not be 100% happy with it but it works because it is vague. It says "melanin plays a role in protecting the skin". You observe two things happening together and you can say that they are related in some way. Whether melanin actually protects or produces something else that protects, we don't know. But we can say that there is some relation.

@archit...
actually, if I correctly remember, while answering this question I was drunk so may be that is the reason why I messed up here.
Anyways, B is correctly the first option that should be eliminated immediately.

Go for D. albinism--> lack of melanin --> sunburn
So Melanin helps protect sunburn

This argument provides that albinos, or people whose bodies do not produce melanin, are unusually susceptible to solar exposure. This suggests a connection between the production of melanin in humans and protection from sunburn and other sun-related ailments; we should look for a conclusion that draws this connection.

A)People born with albinism develop other biological protections against melanoma and other sun-related health issues. -Out of scope
B)Humans with a high production of melanin can easily ignore health issues related to exposure to the sun. - This conclusion is too extreme to be supported by the argument; nothing in the argument suggests that humans whose bodies produce high levels of
melanin can "easily ignore" sunburn or other sun-related health issues.
C)When a non-albino person gets sunburn, the amount of melanin produced by that person decreases. - Out of scope
D)In humans, melanin plays a role in protecting the skin from developing sunburn and other sun-related ailments. - Correct
The argument does strongly suggest that melanin plays some role in protecting the skin from developing sunburn and other sun-related ailments, since albinos do not produce melanin and are unusually susceptible to sun-related ailments.

E)It is not possible for a person born with albinism to adopt other artificial protective measures against excessive exposure to the sun. -Out of scope
