All of John’s friends say they know someone who has smoked 40 cigarettes a day for the past 40 years and yet who is really fit and well. John does not know anyone like that and it is quite certain that he is not unique among his friends in this respect.
If the statements in the passage are true, then which one of the following must also be true?
(A) Smokers often lie about how much they smoke. ........>Could be true
(B) People often knowingly exaggerate without intending to lie. .......>outside the scope of the fact sets
(C) All John’s friends know the same lifelong heavy smoker. .....>the statement must be false since some of John's friends don't know about the smoker(According to the highlighted portion of the sentence,he is not unique=some of his friends still in his situation of not knowing ),but the question asked about must be true answer choice.
(D) Most of John’s friends are not telling the truth. ........Could be true because most of John's friends may not know the fact of the smoker
(E) Some of John’s friends are not telling the truth. ......> some of John’s friends= means at-least one of John's friends.information must be true as the fact

Oa is
[Reveal] Spoiler:
e

Why cant c be OA?

This is a very bad, incorrect and third rate question.
No one who has an iota of knowledge of Logic or reasoning would make such a question.

For all logic and critical reasoning , there is no difference in "Most/many/some/not all".
In logic ---> 1=some=many=99= not all
In logic ---> 0 = None
In logic ---> 100 = all

Therefore answer D and E are both correct.
A GMAT question cannot have 2 correct answers.

Remember quantifier like all, not all , some, many and none have different meaning in logic than in English.
Quantifiers in Logic are more similar to mathematical symbolism and has a close relationship with set theory. such as Union, intersection, null set and so on.

THIS IS A BLATANTLY WRONG QUESTION AND SHOULD BE DELETED WITHOUT GIVING IT A SECOND THOUGHT.

Hey Guys.. I am not sure how E is correct.

The statement starts with All, therefore I am not sure how D and E could be correct. Most or Some are still not equal to All.

This post was
BOOKMARKED
IMO, since John is NOT UNIQUE ->he is the same with SOME or MOST of his friends (say another way, he is the same at least ONE of his friends)
Let take an example set of 100 John's friends:
SOME has wider range of possibilities (1-100), and MOST (51-100) is a subset of SOME
So, E is a Must be True

Hi Expert,
The argument does not have anything related to lying or telling the truth, also it is quite possible that all of the fiends know a single person who smokes 40 cigs...
The choices preosented in the question and the argument prosented are not coherent,The official answer provided is E but after evaluation of the argument and the choice C seems to be an answer if any.

Requesting support on understanding whats required here.

here is the deal.... Some= x%<50%<100% where x% >0% and Most= 50% <x%<100%...Argument says john is not unique among his friends. So some of his friends must lie. Some includes most also

This is an awesome question as it helps understand that how a simple word "some" and "all" can change the whole scenario.
Suppose John has 10 friends and all know someone who is smoking since last 40 years. John is the only one who knows no one. The argument says "john isnt unique" it means he is same as his friends. Now saying that all of his friends (10 friends) are lying. well, isnt it extreme to say that all are lairs? but it isnt extreme to say that some of John's friends are lying...so E is the right option.

All of John's friends say they know someone who has smoked 40 cigarettes a day for the past 40 years and yet who is really fit and well. John does not know anyone like that and it is quite certain that he is not unique among his friends in this respect.

If the statements in the passage are true, then which one of the following must also be true?

This is a must be true/ inference questions and thus, all statements in the argument are premises.

(A) Smokers often lie about how much they smoke. - This can't be inferred from the argument
B) People often knowingly exaggerate without intending to lie. - There is no indication of exaggerating without intent.
(C) All John's friends know the same lifelong heavy smoker. - John said he knew none. John's friends claimed they all knew someone who fell in the category. Nowhere is it mentioned that they knew the same person.
(D) Most of John's friends are not telling the truth. - Since, John claims that he knows no smoker and since he is not unique in holding this view point, it can be inferred that some of his friends are lying but we have nothing to state that a majority of his friends are lying. Even 1 person lying will be consistent with the argument.
(E) Some of John's friends are not telling the truth. - Yes. This can be reasonably inferred. If John claims he knows no smoker and he is not unique to this view then this means that atleast one of his friends also does not know any smoker and he/ she is lying. So, we can say that some of his friends are lying. All the other friends might know someone who smoke. Correct.
