All of John’s friends say they know someone who has smoked 40 cigarettes a day for the past 40 years and yet who is really fit and well. John does not know anyone like that and it is quite certain that he is not unique among his friends in this respect.

If the statements in the passage are true, then which one of the following must also be true?
(A) Smokers often lie about how much they smoke.
(B) People often knowingly exaggerate without intending to lie.
(C) All John’s friends know the same lifelong heavy smoker.
(D) Most of John’s friends are not telling the truth.
(E) Some of John’s friends are not telling the truth.

E.

A and B are irrelevant.
Between D and E, "not unique among his friends" forces me to select E.

i picked E too.It was also less extreme than was d.I read somewhere that when stuck between two answer choices, go with the more neutral one.

Can someone tell what the term 'unique' means in this context? Please elaborate.

Best..

Unique here means "not the only one person who swims against the current" i.e., John is not the only one person who does not know the smoker. Some of his friends does not know the smoker as well. But they are lying.

The question beginnes with "all of John's friends" and ends with "John is not unique or the only one who does not know the smoker.

I think this helps Doloris

E. Sounds weird but should be sample logic.

20 secs and i pick (E).
All of John's friends claim something, and John claims something else, and believes he is not the only one who agrees to his own claim. Means some of his friends may be lying.

Go with "B"

I cannot eliminate D. To be unique, he has to be one weirdo in all.
Its possible that 90/100 (most) friends are lying and don't know anyone who smokes that bad and hence John still belongs to that group and is not unique.

Same goes for E. Some can be 50/100 or 10/100 and hence he is still not unique.

Rather I will go with B, in that case, even though the friends think they know people who smike that heavily, but in reality it is poeple who (often exaggerate) are lying. It may so be possible that John have not any such people.

I may be way off, but if it were the exam day I would go with "B"[/b]
