Alpha Cola, the best selling soft drink nationally among soda drinkers aged 18 to 25, recently completed an expensive and successful ad campaign. The makers of Epsilon Cola, a less popular soft drink that has been on the market for many years, claim that without the recent ad campaign, Alpha Cola would be no more popular than Epsilon.

Which of the following, if true, would cast the most serious doubt on the assertion of the makers of Epsilon Cola?

(A) Alpha Cola’s recent ad campaign was intended in part to increase sales of the soft drink to soda drinkers aged 18 to 25.
(B) Beverage buying decisions can be significantly influenced with effective ad campaigns.
(C) Alpha Cola’s recent advertising campaign was one of the most expensive advertising campaigns in history.
(D) Prior to the recent campaign, Alpha Cola had never advertised but had significantly outsold all other soft drinks on the market for several years.
(E) Most people prefer the taste of Epsilon Cola to that of Alpha Cola.

Any fact related to recent ad campaign would support the argument that Alpha Cola has gained more popularity by promoting ad campaign. So A, B, C are out.

E is irrelevant. The argument doesn't care about the taste of each drink.

D indicates that Alpha Cola were still prominent without any Ad campaign. This choice weakens the argument.

How would one measure how popular a drink is? It will be the one that is consumed the most.

Easy D. Only the one option which explains why Alpha is more popular than Epsilon.
While A, B, C does not weaken, rather strengthen Epsilon cola's claim, E comes close but D does a better job.

Situation = A is successful in sales towards 18-25 bracket, but they recently launched a targeted marketing campaign. E claims that the campaign caused the success.

Logic: Causal reasoning in the conclusion.

Whenever we have causal reasoning in the conclusion, the reasoning is flawed.

Alternatively, if a causal statement is a premise then no causal reasoning error exists in the argument, but the argument may be flawed in other ways

Error in causal reasoning: two or more events occur at the same time

We should aim to disprove that one event caused another somehow, show an alternate cause of the stated effect or otherwise.

(D) Prior to the recent campaign, Alpha Cola had never advertised but had significantly outsold all other soft drinks on the market for several years.

This shows that A must have been the best selling drink prior to the launch; thus, the stated effect was already existing and the stated cause must not have impacted this as it was only completed "recently"
