Good questions. Sometimes passive is the right answer.
B it is as D is ambiguous.

B is passive, but is the best of all. 'it' in D is ambigious.

Conceptual error - I thought if although is used , pronoun used after comma refers to subject in the first line.. now think it is reverse subject used after comma refers to pronoun use after although -- please clarify

Although aspirin irritates the stomach, it can be avoided if the aspirin tablet is given a coating that will not dissolve until the tablet reaches the intestine.

(A) Although aspirin irritates the stomach, it
"ït" has ambiguous antecedent -incorrect
(B) The irritation of the stomach caused by aspirin
hold;
(C) The fact that aspirin causes irritation of the stomach
incorrect- "the fact" can be avoided? meaning error
(D) Aspirin causes stomach irritation, although it
contrast is improper when "although"is used.
(E) Aspirin irritates the stomach, which
"which" is modifying stomach - incorrect

(B) is passive but the ambiguity of "it"is not there ; irritation can be clearly avoided-right answer choice

Although aspirin irritates the stomach, it can be avoided if the aspirin tablet is given a coating that will not dissolve until the tablet reaches the intestine.

(A) Although aspirin irritates the stomach, it

Here we have an ambiguous 'it.'

(B) The irritation of the stomach caused by aspirin

The head of the noun phrase, 'irritation', logically refers to the 'can be avoided'. Don't let the 'caused by' fool you. This is not passive tense but is modifying 'irritation.'

(C) The fact that aspirin causes irritation of the stomach

One is not avoiding the 'fact' but rather the 'irritation.'

(D) Aspirin causes stomach irritation, although it

Ambiguous 'it.'

(E) Aspirin irritates the stomach, which

This is implying that the stomach should be avoided (remember the touch rule with 'which').

(A) Although aspirin irritates the stomach, it
(B) The irritation of the stomach caused by aspirin
(C) The fact that aspirin causes irritation of the stomach
(D) Aspirin causes stomach irritation, although it
(E) Aspirin irritates the stomach, which

first of all we have to find out what can be avoided if aspirin tablet is given a coating that will not dissolve....
Its the irritation. So it should come as a subject or if we use any clause, it should refer the irritation.
A- it does not refer the irritation. Actually we dont know what it refers
C- Here its Fact can avoided ...TOTALLY WRONG
D- we don't know what it is referring. either aspirin or irritation
E- which is not referring to irritation

B - The subject is irritation that can be avoided .. CORRECT

Awesome split. This is the simplest way i guess to do this within a minute.

I got this question wrong because I eliminated option B, seeing the passive form.
I've learnt a new lesson. Don't eliminate option only because of passive form, other options may have genuine problems.

(B) The irritation of the stomach caused by aspirin

Answer B: "X".... can be avoided if the aspirin tablet is given a coating that will not dissolve until the tablet reaches the intestine.

Therefore, X must be clarified as the subject ===> answer B

DOUBT: The original question begins with "Although...." and hence presents a contrast. However, none of the answer choices except D retains the contrast. I understand that option B seems to be the best option but does it sound all right to do away with the contrast, which clearly changes the meaning?
