Guess there is a typo in the question.
It says history of various
while A says:
history or various

If it is typo, I guess A is fine then.

I will go with C
Prefer C over A - becos C is more concise than A.
We need a contrast - Dozens of museums are devoted to X or Y but there are many one of a kind.........................

OA is "D" and I don't know how.....I picked "C" as it seemed to be concise with intended contrast. Anyone ?

Himalaya, how did u use POE to eliminate "C"...what's wrong with "C" ?

(A) either .... or. wrong comparision.
(C) but is inapproperiate here because the sentence is doing nothing to change the direction/or tone of the first clause
(D) seems ok.
(E) totally ungramatical.

I have this question in my error.
Trick : u have to find out whether it is a "contrast question" or it is an "additional information" question.
If you analyse carefully, u will find that second portion is trying to add something to main clause. So all options that include contrast conjuctions (Although, but) should be dropped.
Only (D) and (E) are left.
U can safely pick (D) over (E) for correct grammatical usage.

E is a sentence fragment also. It is missing a verb

[past participle phrase] Devoted to local history or various ethnic groups,

compound noun dozens of New York’s small museums and also many one-of-a-kind museums from Manhattan to the Bronx
[restrictive clause modifying the Bronx or lets assume is modifying museums ] that are open for exploration on summer weekends.

Now, where is the verb / predicate???

D is a run on...

how can you have a comma before and?

2) I think we have to independent clauses....how can we combine them with a comma?

anyway if i were to ignore this...then D it is..
