Although it won't increase bank revenues to upgrade the operating systems running the nation's ATMs, it is the risks involved in failing to update the software that make that alternative more costly.

Although it won't increase bank revenues to upgrade the operating systems running the nation's ATMs, it is the risks involved in failing to update the software that make that alternative more costly.

Although upgrading the operating systems running the nation's ATMs won't increase bank revenues, the risks involved in failing to update the software make that alternative more costly.

Even though it won't increase bank revenues if the operating systems running the nation's ATMs are upgraded, it is the risks involved in failing to update the software that could make that alternative more costly.

It won't increase bank revenues if and when the operating systems running the nation's ATMs are upgraded, whereas the alternative of failing to update the software is more costly, given the risks involved.

Upgrading the operating systems running the nation's ATMs won't increase bank revenues above today, but failing to update the software is the more costly alternative because of the risks involved.

OA and OE after three responses.

The reason why I crossed off A, C, D is that it clearly doesn't have any antecedent. Not sure if one can do this straight away, especially if the subject becomes clear later in the sentence?

Anyhow, in B, this time "that alternative" doesn't have antecedent. What is the alternative?

So I'll go with E, though I'm not sure whether one can say "to increase the revenues above today?"

A,C,D can be directly eliminated. [Usage of "IT" is wrong]
I chose "B".
"E" states that "Wont generate revenue ABOVE TODAY". "Above today" looks redundant to me.

Regarding "B" - "Failing to update the software" is a Gerund Phrase. A Gerund phrase always functions as a NOUN.
and here "THAT" acts as a relative pronoun. "That" Refers to the noun "Failing to update the software"

"failing to update the software that make that alternative more costly." Hence it conveys tat if the bankers failed to update the software it will cost them.

The above is my reasoning. If anything wrong in that kindly clarify. Thanks..

Chose Option "B" as correct.

I too will go with B on this one.

E makes a wrong comparison.

"revenue above today" should rightly be "revenue above today's (revenue-implied)".

Dom.

Explanation from GMAT FREE, the source

Creating a filter: in the original sentence, we have two conversational uses of the pronoun "it" that have no actual reference. Both must go, and (A) is out. We'll seek to eliminate other answer choices with the same problem.

Applying the filter: choices (C) and (D) have the same problem as (A), so those two are out. Choice (B) has no clear defect, so we can come back to it. Choice (E) communicates the intended meaning less clearly. We've lost the meaning of where the risks come from. Risks involved in what? Therefore, (E) is inferior to (B).
The correct answer is (B).
