B for me

Though B is not the most elegant answer choice , but IMO it is correct for this question

my line of reasoning is the same as alpha

what is the OA for this

One more B. See below why I think A is wrong.

Quote:
Although most of the hundred million bicycles in the United States are probably still relegated to garages and basements, the rising price of motor fuels has led to an increasing number being used for both transportation and recreation.

A. an increasing number being (Has led to what? To an increase, not to number)
B. an increase in the number (good)
C. increasing numbers that are (‘led to … numbers’ is wrong)
D. and increased number being (‘led to and increased number’ has no sense)
E. an increase in the numbers being (‘the numbers’ is wrong, also ‘being’ is redundant)

I go for (E)
Whats the OA ????
IMO reasoning :

Although most of the hundred million bicycles in the United States are probably still relegated to garages and basements, the rising price of motor fuels has led to an increasing number being used for both transportation and recreation.

A. an increasing number being ->its not still increasing.Eliminate
B. an increase in the number ->number being used does not make an sense.eliminate
C. increasing numbers that are ->Eliminate since no verb
D. and increased number being -> and makes it awkward.eliminate
E. an increase in the numbers being -> numbers refers to biycles...hence thif fits the best.

OA plssss?

Although most of the hundred million bicycles in the United States are probably still relegated to garages and basements, the rising price of motor fuels has led to an increase in the number (of bicycles) used for both transportation and recreation.

(of bicycles) - is implicit here
