E it is.

The rest are either too wordy or unidiomatic.

E is correct

Paul,
I intended to put it in the verbal forum, not sure why it ended up elsewhere. Can we move it to the verbal forum or should i continue the discussion here.
Thanks

A) while being an adolescent
(B) while in adolescence
(C) at the time of her being adolescent
(D) as being in adolescence
(E) as an adolescent

remove all with being....

left with B and E

Look at the dependent clause, she HAD signed means she was done signing so can not use while, because while says at the same time...
You have to indicate that one thing happened before the other.

If you can not, then keep it a noun. That's what E does.

B can be made correct by using BEFORE or WHEN with a clause.

Although she had signed a pledge of abstinence BEFORE she was an adolescent, Frances Willard was 35 years old befre she chose to become a temperance activist.

E it is...

Ritesh good explanation....as he said...the action was in the past, it ended, and is not continuing anymore...so we need to use the past tense..

OA is E.
I narrowed it down to A & E. And then even though E sounded correct to me, I picked A for this reason. "As an adolescent" gave me an impression that she was 35 , but she signed as an adolescent so she lied when she signed. She was not adolescent, but she signed as an adolescent.

And then I went back to A and it clearly said, she signed while being adolescent ( that is when she was adolescent) and hence I picked A.
Thanks
