(A) is the CORRECT ANSWER as it properly observes Subject Verb Agreement. The singular subject "Amelia Earhart" is matched by the singular verb "has paid".

(B) changes the meaning of the original sentence, by changing the word "flight" to "flights". The original sentence states that there was only one such flight, but this answer choice states that there were at least two.

(C) unnecessarily changes the meaning of the original sentence by changing the phrase "a high price" to "high prices".

(D) and (E) can be eliminated, because they violate the Subject-Verb agreement: "Amelia Earhart... have paid"

Amelia Earhart, the first woman who crossed the Atlantic Ocean in a solo flight, has paid a high price for her passion for aviation.

A. a solo flight, has paid a high price

B. solo flights, has paid a high price

C. a solo flight, has paid high prices

D. solo flight, have paid high prices

E. flying solo, have paid a high price

NOTES: "Amelia" is singular, thus the verb must be "has [sing]"; "her passion" is singular, thus she paid "a high price" not "prices"; she was the first to cross in "a solo…".

A. a solo flight, has paid a high price

B. solo flights, has paid a high price

C. a solo flight, has paid high prices

D. solo flight, have paid high prices

E. flying solo, have paid a high price

D and E are out for using plural verb for singular subject. 'Solo flight' or 'solo flights' both are wrong.
Only A is correct. Singular verb 'has' for singular subject 'Amelia'.

Subject is singular, Amelia, so we can eliminate choices with have and the flight is solo, which requires 'a'. Also the idiom is pay a high price, all these makes option A the CA.

OFFICIAL EXPLANATION

Amelia Earhart, the first woman who crossed the Atlantic Ocean in a solo flight, has paid a high price for her passion for aviation.

A. a solo flight, has paid a high price

Correct!

The original sentence correctly observes Subject Verb Agreement. The singular subject Amelia Earhart is matched by the singular verb has paid.

B. solo flights, has paid a high price

Incorrect.

Although this answer choice is grammatically correct, this answer choice changes the meaning of the original sentence, by changing the word flight to flights. The original sentence states that there was one such flight. This answer choice states that there were at least two.

C. a solo flight, has paid high prices

Incorrect.

Although this answer choice is grammatically correct, this answer choice unnecessarily changes the meaning of the original sentence by changing the phrase a high price to high prices.

D. solo flight, have paid high prices

Incorrect.

By changing the singular verb has to the plural have, this answer choice creates a Subject Verb Agreement mistake.

What helps identify this question as a Subject Verb Agreement question as well as identify the mistake is the following Stop Sign: A long, complex subject or a great distance between subject and verb

E. flying solo, have paid a high price

Incorrect.

By changing the singular verb has to the plural have, this answer choice creates a Subject Verb Agreement mistake.

In addition, this answer choice is stylistically flawed and doesn't fit. By changing solo flight to flying solo this answer choice creates the awkward phrase in flying solo, which doesn't fit well into the original sentence.
