(a) Among the many breeds of dogs that have developed over the last two centuries, some have been bred for specific tasks like herding or guarding owners
(b) Between the many breeds of dogs that were developed over the last two centuries, specific tasks have been bred into some, such as herding or guarding owners
(c) Many breeds of dogs have developed over the last centuries, some for specific tasks like herding and guarding owners.
(d) Over the last two centuries, many breeds of dogs have been developed, some for specific tasks such as herding or guarding owners
(e) Among the many breeds of dogs that had developed over the last two centuries, specific tasks such as herding or guarding owners have been bred into some
Can anyone please explain why D is correct and what role "some for specific tasks such as herding or guarding owners" is playing? Is it a modifier or full clause. If it is the later then I think conjunction is required to connect.
imagine just saying the phrase (leaving the rest of the sentence out)- some for specific tasks such as herding or guarding owners -- your mind goes what are for specific tasks?- this is classic characteristic of a modifier it always makes you wonder "what is this phrase refering to"?
modifiers must always be separated from the main clause using a comma or a pair of commas
in this sentence both the modifiers are phrases. ( we know its a phrase because there is no subject or a verb)
analysing option d:
(d) Over the last two centuries, many breeds of dogs have been developed, some for specific tasks such as herding or guarding owners
"such as" correctly describes the examples herding or guarding owners,
the modifier "over the last two centuries" satisfies the questions what has or what is? that is what has happened over the last two centuries?- ans many breeds of dogs have been developed!
and the modifier "some for specific tasks such as herdig or guarding owner" answers the question-- what are used for specific tasks? -ans)"some breeds of dogs"
therefore D Is the correct option!
hope this helps
