An anesthetic that is highly effective and has no negative side effects can be produced only from the webs of a spider species that is endangered in the wild. It takes 1,000 webs to make 1 gram of the drug. It follows, therefore, that continued production of the drug must inevitably lead to the species’ extinction.

Which of the following, if true, most seriously weakens the argument above?

A. The anesthetic made from the spiders’ webs is widely distributed.

B. The anesthetic made from the spiders’ webs is expensive to manufacture.

C. Parts from the spiders are used to produce other medications.

D. Each night the spiders spin new webs and abandon the old webs.

E. The spiders live in very inaccessible places

A. The anesthetic made from the spiders’ webs is widely distributed. ---strengthens

B. The anesthetic made from the spiders’ webs is expensive to manufacture.--somewhat weakens

C. Parts from the spiders are used to produce other medications.-strengthens

D. Each night the spiders spin new webs and abandon the old webs. ---no need to harm the spiders , as webs are available for free !!
Best of the lot

E. The spiders live in very inaccessible places--!!

D for me

Stimulus :
An anesthetic can be produced only from the webs of a spider species that is endangered in the wild, therefore, that continued production of the drug must inevitably lead to the species’ extinction.
But what if the collection of webs in order to produce the anesthetic mean no harm to the endangered spiders? - A weakener

D. Each night the spiders spin new webs and abandon the old webs. --> Correct, matches our pre-thinking, it means no harm to the endangered spiders, for the spiders were anyway about to abandon the older webs, hence a weakener

Hence, D.

E. The spiders live in very inaccessible places

---------------
Stem says - Anesthetic can only be produced from spiders web. But spiders themselves are endangered. So if we continue to produce drugs, spider will become extinct.

Gap in conclusion - Anesthetic produced from spiders web not from spiders themselves.
---------------------------
So keeping this in mind we see the answer choices =>

(A). The anesthetic made from the spiders’ webs is widely distributed.

Explanation - Out of Scope. No relation to how widely the drug is getting distributed after production. We want to talk about things that happen before production.
---------------------------
(B). The anesthetic made from the spiders’ webs is expensive to manufacture.

Explanation - Out of scope. Cost of manufacture not relevant.
---------------------------
(C). Parts from the spiders are used to produce other medications.

Explanation - Out of scope. We want to talk about things that happen before production not after.
---------------------------
(D). Each night the spiders spin new webs and abandon the old webs.

Explanation - Seems correct. If spiders are producing web and leaving them. That means it is waste for them and also not harming them. This justifies why using spiders web is not endangering the species.
---------------------------
(E). The spiders live in very inaccessible places

Explanation - Even if they live in inaccessible places we are still using their webs which can might endanger them.
---------------------------
So IMO D

E. The spiders live in very inaccessible places

KAPLAN OFFICIAL SOLUTION:

Correct Choice: (D)

The conclusion is that production of the drug must lead to the spiders’ extinction. The evidence is that it can only be obtained from the webs of a species that is endangered. So the assumption is that collecting the webs will kill the spiders. But if, as choice (D) suggests, the spiders move on to a new web every day, scientists might be able to collect the old webs without endangering the species.

Choices (A) and (C) both provide more reasons that there will be a very wide demand for the spiders and their webs, and thus further support the conclusion.

Choices (B) and (E) suggest that the anesthetic will be difficult and expensive to manufacture, but cannot guarantee that demand will not provide motivation to overcome these obstacles.

Option D is clearly weakening the argument's conclusion.
