An automobile manufacturer’s engineering department developed a new model of its best-selling sedan that lacked certain safety features present in the earlier model, which was still being produced. During the first year of production of the new model, while both models were being sold, the newer model of the sedan sold much better than the older model. The CEO of the automobile company concluded that safety features were not important in consumers’ decisions to purchase the sedan.

B

Here we want to know about safety features, and whether they’re important to buyers. To weaken the CEO’s conclusion that safety features were not important, we need to show that consumers did consider safety to be important, or show another explanation for the consumers’ decision.

(A) No. This is out of scope. We don’t care who the buyers are; we need only to weaken the idea that safety features weren’t important to those buyers.

(B) Yes. We have evidence that safety features are important to buyers; it’s just that the buyers have a different opinion of what makes a vehicle safe.

(C) No. This doesn’t explain the difference between this company’s old and new models’ performance.

(D) No. It doesn’t matter to what age groups the car appeals. This is out of scope.

(E) No. Knowing that the price is the same does not help us weaken the argument. If we had learned the new model was cheaper, however, we would have had an alternate cause for the sales results, which would have been a good way to weaken the argument.

From our initial reading of the argument, the conclusion is that "The CEO felt that safety features were not important in consumer's decision to purchase the sedan".

Since we need to weaken this argument, one way to do that is to show how important safety was for customers to buy the car.

From the options available, Option B matches that pre-thinking. This option provides an alternate reason why the car was considered safe.

The argument is saying a new car came up with less safety features. During the 1st year new car was sold more than the old car even when we are producing the old car also.

So, the conclusion was people don't consider safety as an important factor.

Weaken: May be people did find something safer here, so they bought the new car. Or May be they were not aware of safety features of any of the cars.

A. The automobile company sells cars both for inclusion in corporate fleets and for individual use. : Nothing of safety is being discussed here.
B. Many customers consider the new sedan safe because of certain features in its steering mechanism and body style. : Same as our pre thinking. They found something which was more safe. A direct attack to the conclusion.
C. Many of those who purchased the new sedan also own another car manufactured by the same automobile company. : So, how does that matter? why did they buy new car if it was not safe.
D. The new sedan has sold to more customers in the 18-to-25 age bracket. : Age is OFS.
E. There was no significant difference in price between the newer sedan and the older model.: Price is also OFS. We are told both the cars were sold equally.
