An electricity plant operates in two shifts. Each worker is either in shift A or in shift B. What is the fraction of men and women in the plant that work in shift A?
(1) The number of men working in the plant in shift A is twice the number of men working in the plant in shift B.
(2) The number of women working in the plant in shift B is half the number of women working in the plant in shift A.
Since statement 1 and 2 separately described the proportion of men and women working in both shift, we have to check if they are sufficient together. Suppose, there are 90 women and 90 men. Together, in shift A, no of men = 60 and no of women = 30. So, 90 out of total 180 employees work in shift A So, 50% of women and men work in shift A.
Again if we take, no of men as 270 and no of women as 90, then no of men working in shift A will be 180 and no of women in A will be 30. So, out of total 360 employees, (180 + 30+ = 210 men and women work in shift A, which is less than 50%.
Two different possibilities. E is the answer
