Anti-spam software can prevent unwanted mail by either filtering incoming messages with the aid of rule-based filters or asking users to blacklist the addresses sending them junk mail.

A. asking users to blacklist the addresses sending them--- The correct choice

B. asking users to blacklist the addresses, sending them --- the comma before the participle sending changes the meaning

C. by asking users to blacklist the addresses from which they are sent --- the preposition ’by’ is redundant and spoils the parallelism; in addition the antecedent of ‘they’ is unclear.

D. ask users to blacklist the addresses sending – Unparallel

E. by asking users to blacklist the addresses that send--- the preposition ’by’ is redundant and spoils the parallelism

IMO A

Anti-spam software can prevent unwanted mail by either filtering incoming messages with the aid of rule-based filters or asking users to blacklist the addresses sending them junk mail.

Either X or Y
X & Y should be parallel... X= Filtering , Y = asking

A. asking users to blacklist the addresses sending them - Sending is a V-ing modifier modifying Noun - "Addresses"
B. asking users to blacklist the addresses, sending them- V-ing acting as a clause modifier- Anti-spam software send them junk mail (Not make sense)
C. by asking users to blacklist the addresses from which they are sent
D. ask users to blacklist the addresses sending
E. by asking users to blacklist the addresses that send

Is it A ?
Real toss up between A and B.
Meaning :
Anti-spam software can prevent unwanted mail by either filtering incoming messages or asking users to blacklist the addresses.
Which addresses ?
addresses that send the users junk mail.

Idiom Either X or Y is logically and grammatically parallel in this case.
Modifier sending them junk email modifies to addresses and provides extra info about the blacklist the addresses.
So the sentence is error free IMO.

Anti-spam software can prevent unwanted mail by either filtering incoming messages with the aid of rule-based filters or asking users to blacklist the addresses sending them junk mail.

A. asking users to blacklist the addresses sending them -- Correct

B. asking users to blacklist the addresses, sending them -- Illogical meaning with the usage of ,verbing.. ,sending doesnot make sense with the subject of the prev clause i.e Anti-spam software . Anti-spam software effect in sending users junk email.-- out

C. by asking users to blacklist the addresses from which they are sent -- Parallelism issue . Either filtering or by asking is not grammatically parallel. out.

D. ask users to blacklist the addresses sending -- -- Parallelism issue . Either filtering or ask.. is not grammatically parallel. out.

E. by asking users to blacklist the addresses that send -- -- Parallelism issue . Either filtering or by asking is not grammatically parallel. out.

A: No problem with original sentence.

B: comma + verb ing. sendng seems to modify the action
either.. or..parallel list --> either filtering ..or asking :: by is taken common before either so C & E gone
D breaks the parallelim

OFFICIAL EXPLANATION

Anti-spam software can prevent unwanted mail by either filtering incoming messages with the aid of rule-based filters or asking users to blacklist the addresses sending them junk mail.

A. asking users to blacklist the addresses sending them

The original sentence correctly uses parallelism with the either...or structure: by either (1) filtering ... or (2) asking ...

Although this answer choice is stylistically flawed because of a pronoun ambiguity (them can refer either to addresses or users), it is the only answer choice that is grammatically correct and retains the original meaning. Therefore, it is the best answer choice.

B. asking users to blacklist the addresses, sending them

Incorrect.

This answer choice changes the original meaning of the sentence. By adding a comma, it separates the phrase sending them junk mail from the original the addresses (that are) sending them junk mail. This new separate phrase implies that the anti-spam software sends junk mail.

C. by asking users to blacklist the addresses from which they are sent

Incorrect.

This answer choice is grammatically incorrect. In the list by either filtering ... or ..., the part of speech that follows either must also follow or. In this answer choice, either is followed by a verb: filtering. Or, however, is followed by a preposition: by.

What helps us identify this question as a Parallelism question as well as identify the mistake is the following Stop Sign: (n)either... (n)or...

D. ask users to blacklist the addresses sending

Incorrect.

This answer choice is grammatically incorrect. In the list by either filtering ... or ..., the part of speech that follows either must also follow or. In this answer choice, either is followed by filtering, a V+ing verb. Or, however, is followed by ask, a base formverb.

E. by asking users to blacklist the addresses that send

Incorrect.

This answer choice is grammatically incorrect. In the list by either filtering ... or ..., the part of speech that follows either must also follow or. In this answer choice, either is followed by a verb: filtering. Or, however, is followed by a preposition: by.
