Anyone applied for Ivey's AMBA?  [#permalink]

I applied last month to Ivey's Accelerated MBA and want to share my experience:

I am a CPA with 5+ years of work experience working in Finance. I sent in my application package after receiving exemption for GMAT. One of their recruting Executive Director helped me improve my essays with only some minor corrections in grammar and said I had a pretty strong application.
Then they contacted me for an interview. The recruitment lady asked me some behaviourial questions. The interview was pretty much one sided as she just asked a question and then wrote down some notes without digging deep into some of my key talking points, unlike any real job interviews.

They said they will let me know within 3 weeks but 4 weeks later, they told me I was rejected. They also mentioned in the interview that I would receive detailed feedback on how to improve my applications even if I were rejected, but I only received a generic copy/paste message with even inconsistent fonts.

I am not bitter on my rejection as I still have a lot of options in terms of career and education, but I just found this whole experience very surreal. In summary:
1. GMAT was exempted for CPAs and CFAs but in some cases, they will ask candidates to write GMAT. I got rejected without even getting such chance to write GMAT.
2. The interview was pretty weird. It was one sided like answering a questionnaire and some of the questions are redundant with the essay questions.
3. Got rejected after hearing that I have a strong application with my essays basically untouched.
4. No detailed feedback on reasons why I got rejected.

Well, I can only assume I didn't fit into their personal preference then. Anyways, I just want to share my experience and curious who else applied and their thoughts.

Hey nieyexz welcome to the Ivey forum!

Sorry to hear about your admissions experience, I can only imagine how annoying the situation is, but maybe I can help moving forward.

First thing I would do is email J.D Clarke (jdclarke@ivey.ca) and ask to schedule a call with him. You can ask him the primary reason for the rejection and maybe come away with some helpful tips on how to improve your application as a whole.

Couple of details that you mentioned above:

1) To my knowledge, the AMBA doesn’t require the GMAT for any candidate, but it can be used to bolster your profile if you feel it needs bolstering or if the recruitment team feels like your profile is off the mark at initial glance.

The MBA program has an exemption for CFAs (not CPAs) , but again it’s at the applicant's discretion to apply without a GMAT.

2) Not sure if this happened in your case, but I’ve heard of interviewers purposely making the process a little disjointed to see how you handle it. Interviews are very subjective so always be on your toes and prepare for any type of scenario.

3 + 4) I think speaking with J.D will help clarify what happened.

It’s important to take a pre-assessment with a grain of salt with any program.

Naturally, every school wants you to apply especially if they see you have a good profile. They will advise you to work on things if you are really missing the mark, but it’s important to put your best foot forward, despite a positive assessment, because admission is far from guaranteed.

I would definitely ask J.D if you can submit a GMAT score to have them reassess your AMBA application or maybe ask if you are still eligible to apply to the traditional MBA (post-GMAT).

Either way, you still have many options available, feel free to message me if you want to chat further.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for the suggestions. The GMAT exemption was granted for both CPAs and CFAs according to their advertising on Linkedin. I was also granted an exemption by JD himself. But anyways, I will book an appointment with thim to discuss further.
