thanks! I'm still waiting on a few r2 decisions (georgetown, vanderbilt), as of current offers I think I'm leaning more towards Simon (55%) over SMU (80k) and Fisher. How is your process going?

With my stats (690 GMAT, 319 GRE), I was waitlisted in Rice and Notre Dame in R1. I interviewed with Vanderbilt and Simon in R2. Looking at the stats of the admits to these schools, I am struggling to remain hopeful. Let's see.

All the best for your upcoming results. Looking forward to see where your next 'mission impossible' leads you :)

Hi. Welcome. Good job on the GMAT.

Just a quick note, you do not need to ever list your high school activities or grades. They no longer matter. This is graduate school and only your college experience matters at this point.

You don’t need to translate the GPA so you are good.

I think you have a good solid profile. Consulting can be tricky but having some data background and if you have good communication and presentation skills, you can ace the interviews.

I think the school choice makes sense in light of the GMAT scores we see at these programs from Asia male applicants. I don’t have much more to add except perhaps UNC. They do not bad with MBBs and consulting.

Hey, can you tell me about scholarship as well?
User avatar
28 Aug 2023, 21:51
It’s a little tricky and tough to get scholarships in top business schools. You have to be really better than other applicants and in someway be desirable and attractive to a particular program to qualify for a merit scholarship. Think about it as football teams that are trying to recruit the best soccer players. Someone to play for free and some need to be attracted with large payments… you have to be really good to be attracted with a scholarship

Hey! I have a query regarding GMAT, Do we get to choose the business school we want to apply and does gmat send marks to 5 chosen colleges for free?
User avatar
29 Aug 2023, 11:00
When you write your GMAT you get to choose 5 school to which GMAC sends your score. You don't have to pay separately for it if you choose to apply to these schools.

You're free to apply to any other school you want to, but you'll have to pay GMAC to send your scores to those schools.

The fees for sending your score is NOT within the application fees which you have to pay anyway (unless you have a waiver)

@CentaClaws I only interviewed at Said. She started by asking what did I learn from all the alumni I spoke to. A bit from my essays. My motivation for Said and my goals post MBA. Since I wanted to get into PE consulting, she asked me my thoughts about PE right now. She asked how I will manage the stress of an MBA. What do I value in a leader. She asked an interested question - there are two types of people in the world, who are they and which one are you.

My interview at Said was very average, I was a bit nervous. I think that was key to my rejection. At Cambridge I feel that I got rejected without interview since I applied in R3.

Hey Prerna,

I'm a fellow applicant to NUS MBA Round 2. Haven't heard from them yet. Do you mind sharing when you received the interview invite from NUS and what the experience was like?
User avatar
15 Feb 2024, 22:12
@SnigdhaSingh I received the invite on 7th January.

The interview was conducted by an adcom member and an alumni. Following were the questions:
1. Tell us about yourself
2. Tell us about how your day to day looks like at your current job
3. You have managed XX no. of people, what are some of the challenges you have faced
4. How can NUS help you in your goals?
5. Tell us about the automations you have mentioned in your application? What's your view on AI?
6. Have you interacted with folks from different geographies and cultures professionally?
7. What sets you apart from others?
8. An instance where you were curious about something?

This went on for some 25 mins and then 5-10 mins were for my questions. They mentioned that they'll get back to me after 2-3 weeks.

All the best to you!

Hi Prerna,
Did you receive an email from Ross about the waitlist? Even i have applied in the R2 cycle, but no update as on date.
User avatar
04 Mar 2024, 03:16
@pshah29 I got an email yes. Stating this:
"If you are not invited to interview, the Admissions team will do an additional review of your application before the decision notification deadline. On March 15, you will receive either a waitlist or deny decision. If waitlisted, your application will continue to be reviewed throughout the cycle. "
So actually I am not even waitlisted - looks like pre-waitlist

Hi. Sorry about the wait. You have extensive experience so the school will always look at why you are looking for an MBA. At the same time Canadian employers always look for relevant experience so as long as you can bring something to the table, you should be Ok.

Are you only apply to Canadian programs?

I have worked in Sales for 1 year and Consulting for 2 years. I am working as a Strategy Consultant in the Media, Entertainment and Sports industry. Post MBA I want to work as a leader in thus industry, specifically as someone who can manage a team, product or athlete to success. I want to be known in the industry as a go-to when there is a company that needs to increase profits and grow market share. My dream is to be a CEO in motorsport, ideally in Formula 1 and lead my team to a world championship.

Fantastic profile. Fan tastic stats. Not sure if the goals are post-MBA goals though, as these are roles that you typically network into, and an MBA placement office may not have the in's to connect you to hiring managers at these places. https://bit.ly/GM_AugAcd_Profile_Evaluation

Wow. Awesome score and awesome profile 💪

A lot of media and entertainment and sports is networking. A number of internships are even unpaid and people are super gung ho to apply for them just because the space is so competitive.

I had a classmate from NASCAR background but that was a totally American thing… and Formula One here is pretty low coverage. it’s doing better but it’s not getting a lot of coverage. I just didn’t want to be disappointed.

It sounds like you already have pretty good ideas and understanding of what you can achieve and reach with an MBA. Going from the same industry into the same industry is a very good thing for admissions and also career chances. The only area I feel you could improve and that could be a bit tricky to navigate with admissions is what can each program do for you. You don’t want to say in your essays or on your applications something that the school doesn’t really do or cannot help you with. This could be an easy fix if you connect with some of the current students which are looking into the sports and media space. A quick 30 minute call can give you a pretty good idea of what you can count on in each of the programs and what challenges you will face so you will be better equipped and not just for the applications.

PS. I’m going to throw @chenalan21 under the bus who is heading to Wharton and looking at media and entertainment space. in case he has some wisdom.

Haha now that I’m called out I’ll put in some thoughts.

Managing a team or athlete is generally a different pathway from MBA. Starting from being an assistant at a talent agency for an athlete, or being a athlete or coach for managing a team. The few examples I’ve heard of are pretty rare. I mostly have context on the basketball case but examples I would think of that came from MBA are Sam Hinkie and Daryl Morey, who went to Stanford and Sloan, but the way they got their starts is very unstructured.

In the case for CEO, I’m not sure how F1 is structures to, but generally in the sports I follow the responsibilities are separate from the General Manager who actually manages to team, signs athletes and coaches, etc. Columbia and Stern’s Media Entertainment and Sports conference recently had CEO of the Brooklyn Nets Sam Zussman speak a bit about that, he’s mostly focused on growing the complex around the Brooklyn Nets and their arena.

Growing profits and market share and leading your team to victory seem separate to me at least for the sports I follow. For profits and market share, your typical mba stuff and goals, and how your MBA will help you in typical ways, will help you the most, just with a little Media Entertainment Sports flavor.

For leading your team to victory, I would go to as many Sloan Sports Analytics Conferences as possible. Unfortunately most MBA programs, even your HSW or M7, aren’t going to have set pathways to go here. A lot of it will be taking shots on getting anyone’s ear and seeing if you can hook anything promising yourself. A great place to catch some ears are conferences like that. A great school name will help, of course, and guys like Morey give back to conferences at their own schools.

I can go a bit deeper into my own findings/experiences networking Pre-MBA if you want to chat. Of course, I haven’t even started my MBA yet so I don’t have that exact context yet.
User avatar
18 Apr 2024, 21:11
If pushed, what would you select between two mutually exclusive choices: MBA or Sports? If the latter, then it may be a good idea for you to explore masters programs in sports management. Equally helpful for you would be to study the organizational structure of F1, which is different from F1 Team CEO's. Also useful might be to specifically study Monisha Kaltenborn, the Austrian former team principal of the Sauber Formula One team. (I am conscious that I may be preaching to the priest here - hence E.&.O.E)
User avatar
18 Apr 2024, 21:15
I’ve only heard anecdotally about people trying to get into sports management from places like Harvard PhD and MBA programs and other really prestigious places taking unpaid internships or working for pennies to be with a team… is purely antidotal stuff and I don’t know how much true it is. it’s very competitive

You have a strong profile and score. These give you a good defense. Balance will entirely depend on how you package and present your achievements, motivations, etc. Make sure your school selection is aligned with your past and target goals. (Dee: admissions consultant)

Wow - you are doing a lot - this is very helpful and very good for admissions.
The main question they will have is why MBA? What are your goals? What do you want to use the degree for?
Make sure that the story of MBA fits well into your overall career goals and history. You want it to be very clear and avoid them wondering if you are doing it because you can't make up your mind type of thing or because you move from job to job to job so do your research and with clear goals you should be in a good.

That's nice and all the best to you! Just wondering why you did not pick Booth or Kellogg.
Also, came across this post today- it can be a nice read for you:

Thank you, that's an interesting read indeed. I chose SOM because I want to move to the social impact space and Yale is very well-known in this regard with a lot of alumni doing really interesting work, plus I really connected with their motto of leaders for business and society!

That's rather nice. Both Kellogg and Booth have a lot of resources around social impact, but Yale is at a different level (their seriousness about the motto included), so, you are going to the right place then.
Come back here once you join and tell us about your experience with the integrated curriculum. :)
