C it is
has been altered is correct - u need present perfect with "since"
Between A and C ~ C is better ... if is used to express a condition but whether is used when two outcomes are possible. Here whether suits best

Few points..
1. Which one is better here - 'IF' or 'Whether'. Since 'IF' is not followed by a 'THEN' clause, 'Whether' is right. This means A and B are out.

2. Looking at D, we have 'whether it was done......, as was done' . 'as was done' surely is awkward. So D is out.

3. b/w C and E..., E has 'a practice done' and C has 'a practice employed'. 'A Practice employed' seems right. C also has 'has been' - which is right. 'had been' and 'a practice done' together does'nt keep the tenses intact.

So C it is.

OA is C
What is a ?practice employed by many artists of the time?? I guess ?sketching? could be a practice, but in the answer there is ?sketched?.

Very nice example to show the tense changes.

My Answer is C as well.

Does everyone see the sutble changes of tenses across the sentence which is perfectly right if we look at it with repect to the context ?

1. The sentence starts off in present tense,
2. moves to a event which happened in the past 'Leonardo da Vinci first sketched'.
3. The context shifts to the 'alteration to the painting' which cannot be past, and cannot be present, so smoothly set in Present perfect tense.
4. Once again the context shifts to other painter of that period, which is a simple past.

too good an example for tense shift.

Thanks buddy for a nice question.
