As evidence of sushi's drastically increasing popularity, the most recent studies show that the number of sushi restaurants in the state increased by more than 3 times in the past 5 years.

Using POE
Consider only "the number of sushi restaurants in the state increased by more than 3 times in the past 5 years".
Noun : The Number
"Increased" & "More Than" are redundant; therefore, eliminate A, B, and C.

Now, consider "As evidence of sushi's drastically increasing popularity,". Here the action is ongoing. So, option E is wrong, because it uses "WAS".

Option D is Correct.

A. increased by more than 3 times

B. increased by more than triple

C. was increased more than 3 times

D. has more than tripled

E. was more than tripled

A. increased by more than 3 times

B. increased by more than triple

C. was increased more than 3 times

D. has more than tripled

E. was more than tripled

KAPLAN OFFICIAL EXPLANATION:

D

The sentence compares the number of sushi restaurants 5 years ago to the number today, telling us that the number today is 3 times as large as the number 5 years ago. But the original version is unidiornatic: a number doesn't increase by more than 3 times. A number "more than triples"

(B) replaces 3 times with triple but incorrectly retains increased by. (C) actually says that the number increased on more than 3 different occasions, which is not the same thing as more than tripling. (D) and (E) both correctly use tripled, but only (D) uses the correct verb. Because the studies have been done in the present, has...tripled correctly indicates that the action occurred before the studies were completed.
