I was considering C and E; ended up choosing E. Is that passive voice makes choice E wordy?

Hi punta,
reasons why E is wrong..
(E) that previously would have been accepted in the past

1) redundancy:-
previously and past are referring to same thing, so usage of both is not required.
2) passive voice:-
ofcorse we avoid PASSIVE voice, if a compact answer is available because invariably passive results in WORDINESS..

Its too easy to answer
A and B are wrong because these choices are using "they" which is plural whereas museum is singular
D and E are wrong cuz of redundancy..either use "past" or "previously"
So C is right

I'm unable to see clause connector with the OA.

As its reputation for making acquisitions of important masterpieces has grown, the museum has increasingly turned down gifts of lesser-known paintings that it would in the past have accepted gratefully

"that" is silent here.

When you have a noun to be modified by a relative clause, and that noun is the object of that clause, we can eliminate the "that". Here, "lesser known paintings" is the object of the verb "accepted". But, when the noun being modified is the subject, we must include "that"[or in case any relative pronoun]

Museum is Singular, so “they” is wrong. Option A, B eliminated.
Option E that previously ...... in the past. Both referring to Past.
Option D it previously...... in the past again.
So option C is correct where it refers to Museum
