Re: As many as 300 of the 720 paintings attributed to Rembrandt may [#permalink]
Also in E, him is referring to Rembrandt, which is used as a possessive. The subject is still the paintings. So him is wrong.

A looks right.

However if the question was paraphrased, could this be correct?

As many as 300 of the 720 paintings attributed to Rembrandt were actually the works of his students or other admirers.

A. Correct answer.
B. There is no need for a possessive noun.
C. “Attributed to be by” – idiomatically incorrect.
D. The 720 paintings are still being attributed to Rembrandt.
E. Meaning error.

should be A.

B, C --> attributed to be (incorrect idiom)
E --> 'him' does not have an antecedent ( remember possive cases are poor antecedents?)

(D) the 720 Rembrandt paintings that were once attributed to him might

was not sure about D but found that 'Rembrandt' is used as a modifier here and it modifies paintings, suggesting that there are some kind of paintings. This leaves 'him' without an antecedent

(A) the 720 paintings attributed to Rembrandt may Correct

(B) the 720 paintings attributed to be Rembrandt’s might [to be Rembrandt’s is awakward]

(C) the 720 paintings that were attributed to be by Rembrandt may [Wordy]

(D) the 720 Rembrandt paintings that were once attributed to him might [Wordy and awakword]

(E) Rembrandt’s paintings, although 720 were once attributed to him, may
[Wordy and awakword]

Option A is Correct.

All other options clearly have sentence construction problem. The sentence is telling about the paintings, which may not Rembrandt's work.

Is it is incorrect to use although in the middle of the sentence, can this be a reason for elimination of option E

Don't believe it can be safe to assume this as a rule.

The correct idiom here is 'attributed to'. Therefore, we can eliminate (B), (C).

(D) shifts the tense, since we don't know for sure whether the paintings are his. (E) is wordy.

That leaves us with (A), which uses the correct idiom, 'attributed to.'

Can we eliminate the options based on the usage of 'may/might'?
