I think in this case down3.net is right about the answer choise (E) as it gives a correct construction "[b]the rarer[/b] something becomes...[b]the more[/b] avidly..."

well, that doesnt really solve the issue

Both D and E are in your league

D uses like to give examples, Like is used for comparing ...that too for comparing NOUNS only.

E correctly uses whether....to give a choice..i would personally prefer such as.
