Hello Aringo!

Could you please evaluate my current profile and provide advice on how to proceed? I’m struggling with a low GMAT score after 4 takes (also nervous about being an Asian American applicant) and would like to know if my target schools are even realistic. I think it’s possible I could reach a 700 with a 5th retake but nothing higher. What would I need to achieve to get my foot in the door for an interview? Full disclosure, I don’t plan to apply for a few years as I recently graduated from undergrad.

Asian/White Male
American (Midwest)

GMAT: 670 (43 Q, 39 V, 7 IR, 6 AWA)
GPA: 3.9 (Summa Cum Laude)
Major: Finance (1st); Marketing (2nd)
Undergrad: Top Regional Private University (Midwest)

Work Experience:
[*]Top tech company early-in-career leadership program (non-technical, marketing & intl focused)
[*]Fulbright scholarship (teaching university students in Asia)
[*]6 internships in undergrad (insurance, government, healthcare & consulting)
    2 Fortune 500 companies
    U.S. Senate
    1 intl internship (China)

E.C.:
[*]Extensive involvement in LGBTQ+ organizations (youth focus)
[*]Student government leadership in uni (oversaw large budget & ran in prez campaign)
[*]Heavy service involvement in uni (leadership in alternative breaks)
[*]Studied abroad in Southern Africa (political science focus)
***Seeking to con’t involvement LGBTQ+ and education-focused orgs. over next few years

Honors:
[*]Fulbright scholar
[*]Thesis publication on K-12 teacher tenure in U.S. public schools
[*]Top 15 student award in uni (2 years in a row)
[*]Guest speaker at undergrad’s state of university address, intl LGBT conference, etc.
[*]Pell-grant recipient & paid my own way through uni via merit & need-based scholarships

Recs:
[*]Confident I can obtain 2 quality recs from supervisors and possibly alums of a Top 10 program

Desire for MBA:
[*]Short-term: to obtain qualifications and skills needed teach business and/or leadership classes to undergraduate students as an adjunct prof.
[*]Long-term: desire to run for public office and/or work in public policy/government, focusing on education and intl relations

Target Schools:
[*]Dream: Yale SOM
[*]Next Preferences: Haas, Kellogg
[*]Others: NYU, LSE, Georgetown
***I’m seeking programs that are more international and government/public policy focused. Are there any others you think I should consider?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Hi Aringo

I know this thread is mostly for MBA aspirants, but can you please review my profile with respect to strength of application for a US Top 20 PhD program?

Profile
- Indian, Male, 30 years old
- GMAT 720 (Q47, V42) in first attempt (May 2019), planning to retake in 4 weeks time and hoping to improve score to at least a 750.
- Planning to apply to Top 20 PhD programs in US in Marketing Specialization (Consumer Behaviour track)
- Schools of Interest (in almost that order): Fuqua, Ross, Kellogg, Columbia, Carlson, Stern, Anderson, Yale, McCombs, Smith (University of Maryland), Foster, Kenan-Flagler

Academic Achievements:

PG: MBA from MICA, Ahmedabad (#1 School in Marketing and Communication, GPA 3.15/4)

UG: B.Tech from IIT Dhanbad (Top 10 in Engineering Schools, GPA 4.0)

School: Intermediate - 95%, High School - 96%

Work Experience:

5+ years of work ex across:
1. Research-based consulting in marketing and communications for a global advisory firm (Publicly traded in US, subsidiary of Gartner)
2. Advertising and Digital Marketing stints at a)leading media and publishing company in India, and b) Top 10 Digital Marketing Agency in India
3. Product Marketing for a tech startup (helped in growth from beta to USD 500K ARR in 16 months)
4, Currently working as the Product Marketing lead for one of the products of an Indian SaaS unicorn

Marketing and communications has been at the core of all my roles, and the diversity in application is something that has broadened my understanding for marketing, at the same time I have been able to narrow down on what it is that specifically interests me about marketing - consumer psychology and motivation. The key skills that I have developed through my work exp. are consumer behaviour research, market research, and marketing and communication strategy design.

Research Experience

No formal RA/TA experience but I have research experience in the form of:
- an MBA dissertation thesis
- couple of live research projects during b-school
- one original research work in my MBA internship (was judged the 2nd best research project amongst all interns, and I was offered a PPO)
- multiple unstructured consumer research projects in my consulting and advertising jobs (the reason for my continued growth in consumer behaviour understanding at an academic level)

Co-Curriculars
1. Have won a bunch of prestigious national-level marketing and business case competitions during b-school (some of them included substantial market research components)
2. Have held positions of responsibility at both PG and UG levels - Member of the community radio and rural outreach team in b-school, and Founder of the Literary Club in UG

Extra-Curriculars

1. Sports: Inter-collegiate level football and badminton during UG and PG
2. Fitness: Certified Crossfit Level 1 Trainer (attained certification as a personal goal, but I've extended my passion for fitness to the community and now teach part-time at the Crossfit box where I workout)
3. Performing Arts: Won several awards for debate, poetry, and quizzing at school and inter-school levels
4. Hobbies and Interests: I like to study cultural influences in music and cinema and vice versa, like to study sociology and psychology and I plan to do a few introductory courses on Coursera to further my learning, and I'm deeply interested in sustainability and clean tech.

Why PhD?

I have always been leaning towards a career that involves critical thinking, research, and 'knowledge production'. While my current career progression has been fulfilling, it has been a bit tactical, and I want to move towards a deeper, more cognitive immersion into the study of marketing, and want to be creating new knowledge in the field, instead of merely using existing theories and models. I am looking to develop an expertise, both theoretical and practical, that lies at the intersection of marketing and psychology, specifically with respect to understanding consumer motivation and psychology towards intangibles such as time, mortality, and adventure.

What after PhD?

Currently undecided. Even though a career in academia is the most obvious choice, I would love to explore a way to bring the knowledge I gather in those 5 year back into the real world and devise method to apply that knowledge (I know this isn't the answer most PhD AdComs want to hear, but on the other hand from what I've researched PhDs are finding increasing acceptance in the industry due to their specialized knowledge, and the demand-supply gap in tenure-track positions for PhDs seems to be worsening by the day).

Questions
- Are my target schools realistic with my current GMAT score? If no, according to my current score, what other schools would you suggest? As I mentioned earlier, I am planning to retake the GMAT, and improve my score to around 750.
- What areas in my profile would you like me to work upon? I plan to apply for Fall 2020 admit, R1 application cycle for PhD programs is Sep-Dec, and even Jan in some of the schools.

Would appreciate a profile review and any advice you may have for me.

I have a question about your admissions calculator. I entered my stats and was mostly encouraged by the results it spit out but there were some surprises. I’d like to ask about two schools where my odds surprised me and hopefully get some insight on the kind of applicant those schools gravitate towards. Hopefully, the answer will help applicants decide where they are a good candidate.

1. Harvard. Your calculator showed I was a dreadful, no shot candidate. I suspect this is because I am 35 and have a low-ish GPA. Does your formula punish age and/or GPA for HBS? I know their reputation is the prefer GPA over GMAT, but I hadn’t heard they were more inclined towards younger candidates than other top schools.

2. Stanford. I was surprised I was just inside the stretch range for Stanford. They have a very high average GPA. I have a low-ish GPA. Is it your experience that, although the average GPA is high, the adcoms aren’t really looking at GPA? Maybe they just want exceptional people and those people usually just happen to have high GPAs?

Hello
I took my GMAT and scored 700.
I am currently pursuing Economics hons from Hansraj College, Delhi University and wish to apply for MIM.
My target college earlier was HEC paris but since my score is a bit low, I dont think I stand a chance.( will be applying though)
My target colleges as for now are as follows:
Essec
London Business School
Insead
St Gallen
HEC

I was wondering if I have a chance in any of the above mentioned colleges given my 700 score.

As far as profile is considered, I have two Internships, one at Yes Bank and another one at news agency. I have undertaken social work as well.

I scored a complete 10 CGPA in 10th and 97% in 12th from commerce.

Also, I will be applying for YLP at Indian School of Business

Please guide me through chances and deadlines of these colleges.
And should I also try for any other college?

Hello!

Requesting a profile evaluation for Top 20 US schools, Cambridge Judge and NUS Singapore please.

Background and nationality: Female, Indian

Undergrad Information:
Graduated with a 9.0 of 10 CGPA from a non-IIT college in India.
I topped my university in my first year of Information Science branch beating around 2500 students and securing a maximum grade of S in 11/12 subjects. As a result of this I got a merit seat in Computer Science and then went onto complete the remaining 3 years of my undergrad as a computer science student.
(Information Science and Computer Science are essentially the same branches in India with almost the same curriculum - Computer Science is slightly on the tougher side)
I interned with a local IT company in my second year of engineering.
I was an active volunteer for 1.5 years at a well known NGO - I taught Math and Science to the students of Grade 8, 9 and 10.
An active volunteer at college cultural events too throughout my undergrad.

GMAT: 700 (Q47, V40) - I really need help deducing if this is sufficient to get me throughUS/UK/Singapore top schools!

Work experience and leadership:
In my last semester of undergrad - I interned for 6 months with a Fortune 100 US company and landed a job with them. Been working with them for the past 4 years in the capacity of a software developer.
I was promoted to Senior Associate in my second year and to Manager in my third year with them.
I lead the Scrum/Agile process for the team and am always the talking point when it comes to interacting with the US counterparts.
I am very well known throughout the global team to be able to multi-manage and communicate effortlessly. I usually lead all the team calls and am always depended most upon to manage the team dynamics.
I am also known to be extremely creative and won the best creative team award for my team at one of our Global events.
I am active member with the firm's Toastmasters club and have served on its club officers group for a year (as a Vice President of PR and as Club Secretary)
I have participated in public speaking competitions(won second place at Division level), hosted events(hosted the area and Division events in my city), mentored folks (mainly involves honing their public speaking and leadership skills by providing constructive feedback/evaluations for every project/level they complete and guiding them structure and prepare their speeches) all over my city. I mentor about 25 people within my home club. I have completed the first level of toastmasters international and am currently in the advanced level. I have been recognized with a special award for my exemplary contribution to Toastmasters as a mentor and as a fellow toastmaster.

All suggestions will be much appreciated. Many Thanks!

Indian, Male, 28 years, CFA, Silver Medalist

Hi All,

Would appreciate if the experts can evaluate my profile:

Indian, Male, 28 years, CFA, Silver Medalist
GMAT: 680 (Q49 V35, IR5, AWA 6)

Work Experience - 6.5 years as of Dec 2019

1. Working as an Independent Consultant (self-employed) to a UK Investment Banking firm. Currently working on 6 deals looking to raise $1 million - $10 million and working on one another Indian company to divest its stake outside India. The work involves consulting and discussions with founders/ senior directors on business, due diligence, fund raising requirements and preparing pitch book, IM and interactions with investors representing the companies. The work gets more interesting since I work closely with the founders and senior management and addressing concerns of investors over companies’ operations, strategy and product from financing point of view.

If finance is your area of interest, the top finance programs in the US are Wharton at University of Pennsylvania, Chicago Booth, NYU Stern and Columbia. In the past we have had clients gain admission into all of these schools with GMAT score much lower than yours. Although all of these schools have an average GMAT score of around 730, NYU’s being slightly lower at 714.

In Canada, Rotman at University of Toronto, have a great finance specialization. They also have included this page on their website, targeting students specifically from India. http://www.rotman.utoronto.ca/Degrees/M ... India.aspx
The average GMAT for this program is 662. This could be a good option for you to look in to.

You might also want to check out this page from our website which delves a little further into finance specializations at universities around the world https://aringo.com/mba-finance-specialization/

I also suggest you check out our free MBA chances estimation calculator. It’s a great free tool.

Your GMAT score is below average for the schools that you show interest in, however we have had clients gain admission to almost all of these schools with GMAT scores of 640. In order for the admission teams to overlook your lower-than-average GMAT score you must make sure that all the other elements of your application are outstanding.

Your work experience is on the short side for MBA applicants, most programs require at least two or three years. The reason being that applicants with more work experience tend to be more prepared and are able to participate more during the discussions.

If you are cautious regarding your ROI, check out our free ROI calculator.

Hi Aringo consultants,

I would really appreciate if any of you could evaluate my profile and suggest possible target schools. I already shared my request in another thread but, since I cannot post links yet, I will report it here as well.

"I would like to apply to an MBA in the U.S. in a year from now (2021 intake / class of 2023). Please find below some information about me.

PROFILE
• Gender: Male
• Nationality: Italian
• Age: 30 years old
• GMAT: 690; 5 (IR); 3.5 (AWA) --> I will definitely retake the test (I am confident that I can get 700+ and raise my IR/AWA scores)
• IELTS: 7/7.5 (expected)

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE
• Big 4 Firm A – Italy
o 1.5 years as Senior Consultant --> I expect to be promoted to Manager in October 2020
• Big 4 Firm B – Italy
o 1.5 years as Consultant
o 0.5 years as Intern
• University A – Netherlands
o 4 months as Teaching Assistant (part time)

EDUCATION
• MSc in Management (2014-2015) – University A – Netherlands – GPA of 8.6/10 cum laude
• MSc in Economics (2013-2014) – University A – Netherlands – GPA of 7.7/10
• BSc in Economics (2009-2013) – University B – Italy – GPA of 93/110
• Full-cycle degree in Law (2008-2009) – University B – Italy – I did not like studying law and, thus, I switched to Economics in the following year

VOLUNTEERING & EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES
• Career advisor for graduate students attending University A
• No significant extracurricular activities

RECOMMENDATIONS
• My current employer will not recommend me (the point is that telling my employer that I am willing to pursue an MBA would jeopardize my chances of being promoted to Manager, as expected, in October of the upcoming year)

CAREER GOALS
• Short-term goal: shift from management consulting to strategy consulting
• Long-term goal: move to industry in a strategy or management role"

Thank you very much!

Hi,

Thanks for reaching out to us. The schools that you are interested in all have an average GMAT of around 610-670, with Desautels, Ivey, NUS and NTU being on the higher end of that spectrum.
I am not sure if IIMs accepts GMAT scores, this is something that you might have to speak directly with them about.

With your GMAT score being around the average, all other aspects of your application must be outstanding. We have some fantastic tools that you can use on our website to help you with that, such as 'essay examples according to schools' and 'low GMAT videos and tips'. Our website is aringo.com

I also highly suggest checking out our free MBA chances estimation calculator. It can give you a more detailed evaluation of your profile.
