A) have expanded in order to become a neutron star, as many stars in centuries past have done already
have expanded: wrong tense as we are talking about an action that will happen in the future AFTER another action.
in order to : redundant ( can be replaced with "to")

B) expand to become a neutron star, as many stars in centuries past have done

C) have expanded so that it can become a neutron star, as did many stars in centuries past, already
have expanded: wrong tense as we are talking about an action that will happen in the future AFTER another action.
so that it can: redundant ( can be replaced with "to")
already: redundant (don't add a meaning)

D) expand to become neutron stars, as many stars of centuries past have done
of centuries past: means that there is a type of of stars specific for the past centuries (not the intended meaning)

E) have expanded that they will become neutron stars, as the stars of centuries past have done
have expanded: wrong tense as we are talking about an action that will happen in the future AFTER another action.

SV pair error , Meaning error

D) expand to become neutron stars, as many stars of centuries past have done-Incorrect
SV pair error , Star becomes neutron star.

E) have expanded that they will become neutron stars, as the stars of centuries past have done-Incorrect

I have one doubt : gmat doesn't prefer use of have when comparison verb in first leg doesn't contain have : however the correct option does so
Imo a better construction should be “as many stars in the centuries past did“

I have some confusion with Option A here.
The statement predicts something in the future, within a specified timeline - I believe the usage of future perfect tense "will have expanded" is correct here. Also, using "have" for a singular noun "A star" is not incorrect, when it is used in future perfect tense.
For eg. - The OA in question "https://gmatclub.com/forum/researchers-have-updated-their-forecasts-of-the-impact-of-melting-ice-303447.html" uses similar future perfect tense.

I agree the sentence is too worded and Option B is clear and concise, but I am unable to find a solid ground of rejecting Option A.
Any help?
