Hi ,

Confused between A and E .
There is tense spit at play here .
Since the sentence is in indirect speech then E is correct as we need past tense to have a proper meaning .

At a discussion panel on the making of Secrets and Lies, British director Mike Leigh stated that by involving actors in the creative process, beginning with the conception of the piece, through research, discussion, improvisation, rewrites, and rehearsals, he aims to depict real life.

Meaning analysis

At a discussion panel on the making of Secrets and Lies,
British director Mike Leigh stated that
- by involving actors in the creative process,
beginning with the conception of the piece,
through research, discussion, improvisation,
rewrites, and rehearsals,
- he aims to depict real life.

here " by involving.....rehearsals" is telling us how he is going to execute his plan to depict real life.
his aim is to depict real life.

Error Analysis
All subject verb pairs are correct in number,

makes sense together. All verb tenses are correct.
Pronoun - he logically refers to Mike leigh
Modifier - "beginning with the conception of the piece" modifies "involving actors in the creative process"
- "through research, discussion, improvisation" modifies "beginning with the conception of the piece"
- "involving actors in the creative process....rewrites, and rehearsals" modifies he aims to depict real life
Parallelism
- there is a parallelism error here..."rewrites, and rehearsals" should be parallel to "involving".

There is no other error

A. rewrites, and rehearsals, he aims to depict real life
incorrect As mentioned above

B. rewriting, and rehearsing, he aims to depict real life
corrects the parallelism error

C. which by rewriting and rehearsing he aimed to depict real life
pronoun error, which is referring to whom?

D. rehearsals, and rewrites, his aim is to depict life realistically
changes the meaning of the sentence depict life realistically

E. rehearsals, and rewrites, he aimed to depict life realistically
aimed is incorrect because simple tense is used for expressing general view, belief

A. rewrites, and rehearsals, he aims to depict real life--- parallelism is ok; but the present tense is an error.

B. rewriting, and rehearsing, he aims to depict real life --both parallelism and tense form are wrong.

C. which by rewriting and rehearsing he aimed to depict real life -- no clear antecedent for which.

D. rehearsals, and rewrites, his aim is to depict life realistically-- wrong modification and wrong tense form.

E. rehearsals, and rewrites, he aimed to depict life realistically -- correct choice.

Pawan: The use of present tense is wrong because this is not a universal incident. It was just specific to only Mike. You require a past tense to synchronize with the tenor of the rest of the sentence. There may be a hairline difference between depicting real life and depicting life realistically in A and E, but that seems to be irrelevant in the context.

Quote:
A. rewrites, and rehearsals, he aims to depict real life
The sentence is describing something about past event. So past tense is required(aimed instead of aims). Rejected.

Quote:
B. rewriting, and rehearsing, he aims to depict real life
Here we have both parallelism error and tense error. The list contains noun elements before the underlined portion. So rewriting, and rehearsing is wrong. Rejected.

Quote:
C. which by rewriting and rehearsing he aimed to depict real life
Though the verb is correct, we have an ambiguous pronoun "which". It is not having a proper antecedent. Rejected.

Quote:
D. rehearsals, and rewrites, his aim is to depict life realistically
Verb tense is wrong. Rejected.

Quote:
E. rehearsals, and rewrites, he aimed to depict life realistically
Here we have a correct verb form and a clearer meaning with "depict life realistically".

So E is the correct answer.

A. rewrites, and rehearsals, he aims to depict real life --> use of aims is incorrect with "ML stated... "

B. rewriting, and rehearsing, he aims to depict real life --> incorrect for same reason

C. which by rewriting and rehearsing he aimed to depict real life --> change in meaning, parallelism is lost

D. rehearsals, and rewrites, his aim is to depict life realistically --> same error as in "A"

E. rehearsals, and rewrites, he aimed to depict life realistically --> Correct
