Assume a number 100..

2/5 male...that means 40...from that 7/8 means 35=(40*7/8) arrives on time.

40 wud be female..from that 9/10 means..54 arrive on time

35+54=89 arrives on time..11 out of 100 didn't arrive on time.. So A is the answer..

The Official Guide For GMAT® Quantitative Review, 2ND Edition

At a monthly meeting, 2/5 of the attendees were males and 7/8 of the male attendees arrived on time. If 9/10 of the female attendees arrived on time, what fraction of the attendees at the monthly meeting did not arrive on time?

(A) 11/100
(B) 3/25
(C) 7/50
(D) 3/20
(E) 4/25

let the total attendees be T .
2/5T = male attendees and therefore it can be derived that 3/5T = women attendees.
7/8 * 2/5T = 7/20T = male attendees who arrived on time. therefore: 1/8 * 2/5 = 1/20 male attendees were late
9/10*3/5T =27/50T = women attendees who came on time. therefore 1/10 * 3/5 = 3/50 were women attendess who came late.

therefore adding both the numbers of attendees who were late : (1/20 + 3/50 )T = (5+6)/100=11/100

So, IMO A.

This is a good question for picking numbers;
Probably, a multiple of the denominators: 5 * 8 * 10 = 400;

Let us assume the total no. of attendees to be 400;
No. of males = (2/5) * 400 = 160; Therefore, No. of females = 240;
No. of male attendees arrived on time = (7/8) * 160 = 140; Therefore, no. of male attendees who did not arrive on time = 20;

We need to find the fraction of attendees who did not arrive on time: So, (1/10)th of the female attendees did not arrive on time = (1/10) * 240 = 24;

20 + 24 = 44; => Total no. of attendees, including male and female, who did not arrive on time = 44;

The fraction = 44/400 = 11/100.(We can stop here and pick Answer A. Suppose, if the aswer were in percentages, it would be 11%).

Ans is (A).

Assuming total no. of members to be 40(multiple of 5 and 8) we get no of males=16 and females=24
On time males=14
Not on time males=2
On time females=216/10
and not on time females=24/10
Adding 2+24/10=44/10*1/40=11/100

1) Fraction of late males: 1/8 (8/8-7/8)
2) Fraction of late females: 1/10 (10/10-9/10)

(1/8 * 2/5) + (1/10 * 3/5) = 22/200 = 11/100, so (A).

At a monthly meeting, 2/5 of the attendees were males and 7/8 of the male attendees arrived on time. If 9/10 of the female attendees arrived on time, what fraction of the attendees at the monthly meeting did not arrive on time?

(A) 11/100
(B) 3/25
(C) 7/50
(D) 3/20
(E) 4/25

Let total attendees be \(x\)

Male attendees \(= \frac{2}{5}x\)

Then, Female attendees\(= \frac{3}{5}x\)

Given that \(\frac{7}{8}\) of male attendees & \(\frac{9}{10}\) of female attendees arrive on time.

So, attendees did not arrive on time \(= x - ((\frac{2}{5})(\frac{7}{8}) + (\frac{3}{5})(\frac{9}{10}))x = (\frac{11}{100})x\)

We can let the total number of attendees = 800. (This is a convenient number that allows the calculations to be easier.)

Thus, there are 2/5 x 800 = 320 males and 800 - 320 = 480 females.

Since 7/8 of the males arrived on time, 7/8 x 320 = 280 males arrived on time.

Since 9/10 of the female attendees arrived on time, 9/10 x 480 = 432 females arrived on time.

Thus, 800 - (280 + 432) = 88 attendees did not arrive on time.

Therefore, the fraction of the attendees who did not arrive on time is 88/800 = 11/100.

Re: At a monthly meeting, 2/5 of the attendees were males and 7/8 of the [#permalink]
To determine the fraction of attendees who did not arrive on time, we need to calculate the fraction of attendees who did arrive on time and subtract it from 1.

Let's break down the information given step by step:

2/5 of the attendees were males.
Let's assume the total number of attendees is represented by "x."
The number of male attendees = 2/5 * x.

7/8 of the male attendees arrived on time.
The number of male attendees who arrived on time = 7/8 * (2/5 * x) = 7/20 * x.

9/10 of the female attendees arrived on time.
The number of female attendees = 3/5 * x (since 2/5 were males, the remaining 3/5 must be females).
The number of female attendees who arrived on time = 9/10 * (3/5 * x) = 27/50 * x.

Now, let's calculate the fraction of attendees who arrived on time:

Total number of attendees who arrived on time = number of male attendees who arrived on time + number of female attendees who arrived on time
= 7/20 * x + 27/50 * x
= (7/20 + 27/50) * x
= (35/100 + 54/100) * x
= 89/100 * x

Finally, let's calculate the fraction of attendees who did not arrive on time:

Fraction of attendees who did not arrive on time = 1 - Fraction of attendees who arrived on time
= 1 - 89/100
= 11/100

Therefore, the fraction of attendees who did not arrive on time is 11/100.

The correct answer is (A) 11/100.
