At a souvenir shop, all posters are priced equally and all maps are priced equally. What is the total price of 8 posters and 6 maps at the souvenir shop?

Questions: 8p + 6m = ?

(1) At the souvenir shop, the total price of 4 posters and 3 maps is $39.70 --> 4p + 3m = 39.70 --> multiply by 2: 8p + 6m = 2*39.70. Sufficient.

(2) At the souvenir shop, the total price of 12 posters and 9 maps is $119.10 --> 12p + 9m = 119.10 --> multiply by 2/3: 8p + 6m = 2/3*39.70119.10 . Sufficient.

This is such a classic GMAT question. It preys on our instinct to mark E by assuming that both conditions reduce to the same equation, not realizing that we don't really need the price of each poster or map.

Hindsight 20/20 though!

I just marked answer C and didn't realize that I can reduce the equation in each line to match the one asked in the question. Argh.

Chances are quite high that you'll see a DS question that tests this EXACT concept on Test Day (you'll likely see it just once, but it's an easy 'pick up' if you recognize it). The broader concept that is tested here is your ability to spot a 'multiple' of a given piece of information and use that pattern to avoid doing heavy calculations. Take note of any question that seems to ask for a really specific combination of items. Here, the question asks for the price of 8 posters and 6 maps....but WHY 8 and 6??? Whoever wrote this question chose those two numbers for a specific reason....maybe it's because we're supposed to look for multiples....
