given
Price of HC = 5\$ and PB 2\$
HC+PB = 22
find HC-PB
#1

Gideon spent a total of \$74 on books at this store.
5*HC+2*PB=74
we get various integer value insufficient
#2
Gideon spent \$26 more on hardcovers than on paperbacks.
5*HC=26+2*PB
and
HC+PB=22
sufficient
solve
PB=12 ; HC = 10
so 50-24 ; 26\$

Let number of Hardcover books be H and number of paper back books be P , then:

We know H+P=22

(1) Gideon spent a total of \$74 on books at this store.
5H +2P=74
H+P=22
Two variables and two unique equations - SUFF.

(2) Gideon spent \$26 more on hardcovers than on paperbacks
5H-2P=26
H+P=22
Again two variables and two unique equations - SUFF.
