my ans is B here...
A sounds fine it wud b the right one in cse I m wron!
C) spolis the modifier and the meaning...
D) same...
E) ''invitation BY'' some how seems not so good...?

chose B over A simply b'cos B has a pronoun ''he'' which is refered back by the use of the subject at the start of the sentence after the coma...

"At the invitation of" is perfectly fine. Hence, A.

Hello

Would the following sentence be acceptable if we didn't have option A?

When he was invited by Kwame Nkrumah, W.E.B. Du Bois settled in Gharla and became the editor of the Encyclopedia Africana.

What makes me think is the pronoun "he" comes before the person it refers to. Is that acceptable?

Thanks in advance

Usage of "when" usually denotes a specific point in time.
Ex: You will get the money when I will return --> You will get the money at the EXACT time of my return

Now, in this example, it says that "W.E.B. Du Bois settled in Gharla and became the editor of the Encyclopedia Africana" and this certainly happened over a SPAN of time. Hence, use of "when" would not be warranted. Most concise choice is A.

OA is A. At the invitation of is the correct idiom.

Danny arrived at the opening of the new theatre at the invitation of the manager.

A is best. For explanation on why B is wrong, see Paul's explanation above.

I'm sorry but I'm french and I don't catch the meaning of "At the invitation of".

Does it mean :
1) Invited by Kwame to do so...
OR
2) during the event Kwame organised...

In french it could have several significations and I'm confused with OA. I would have chosen B.

I'm not native too, but I think the first meaning you said is correct. It means that invited by kwame, he blah blah blah !
