" he was suggested by " is passive structure and generally incorrect for GMAT.

At the suggestion of his guidance counselor, Brad applied to two Ivy League colleges and to the schools he knew would accept him.

(A) At the suggestion of
(B) When he was suggested by
(C) A suggestion coming from
(D) A suggestion that came from
(E) After having a suggestion from

MANHATTAN REVIEW OFFICIAL EXPLANATION:

B changes the meaning in saying that Brad was suggested by his counselor. C and D imply that Brad is the suggestion. A is more efficient than E. Choice A is the correct answer.

A) At the suggestion of — keep

(B) When he was suggested by — diminishes the causal relationship. Eliminate.

(C) A suggestion coming from — meaning change. Here causal relationship is now replaced by “Brad” being the suggestion himself.

(D) A suggestion that came from — same as C

(E) After having a suggestion from — between A & E, A is more idiomatic. Eliminate E.
