I am getting the impression that most Admissions is OK with anything over 4 if you are a native English speaker....therefore I am not preparing till a week or so before exam....

Is this AWA losing revelance, or do you think AdComs really do look for 5s and 6s and give them more weight that we think?

That should work just fine - most people don't spend more than just a few days looking at AWA.
The best resource I have seen around is by Chineseburnt: http://gmatclub.com/forum/t64327-how-to-get-6-0-awa-my-guide

Take a look - you won't have any problems.

I have no idea about the AWA importance, but most don't sped any time on it...I spent about 30 minutes preparing and nabbed a 5.5...and I'm an engineer. I think you'll have to really butcher it to raise flags (4 does, however, seem quite low...I'd aim for a 5+).

I have heard that a 4.5 or better is all that matters.
