Hello friends,
Bossy verbs in Command Subjunctive or Infinitive form: -
Learning SC from
MGMAT book - If you have
MGMAT book, you will encounter this in one of the chapters. Even if you don't - I definitely think you should memorize it, as it will help you in identifying Command Subjunctive sentences (a topic close to GMAC on GMAT SC)
It was hard to remember all the Bossy verbs. Probably you might have found a trick to learn them. This is what I am using - I made a sentence out of that word list and yes I could remember the list anytime.
This list comprises of all the Bossy verbs listed in
MGMAT.
I will start with the Command Subjunctive one - I broke it into two lists and made sentences out of them.
Dictate, Demand, Insist, Mandate, Request, Propose -
Sentence - He is dictating a demand that insists on mandating the requested proposal.
Recommend, Suggest, Stipulate :-
Sentence - My recommendation suggests stipulation.
Example - I request that he leave. (command subjunctive)
Also note that - I have used only "that" in the sentence. You will know why, when you read further. Also, these sentences may not make sense - if you are trying to figure out the actual meaning, don't do that
.
Infinitive - Advice, Want, Allow, Forbid, Persuade : -
My advice wants to allow forbidden persuasion.
Example - Advice - I advised her to try a different location. (infinitive)
Bossy verbs that could take either form - infinitive or command subjunctive:- Beg, Ask, Prefer, Intend, Order, Urge, Require
I beg you to ask her preferred intended order that she urged and required.
Example -
She was required to attend the class. (infinitive)
The teacher required that Mary attend the class. (command subjunctive)
Note that - to and that are used in the sentence per the usage - "to" for infinitive and "that" for command subjunctive.
Kudos please - I need them too!!
Thanks!
