Re: Balance is particularly important when reporting the background of ci [#permalink]
Quote:

Correct Ans- Option B

a) Balanced reporting presents the public with a picture of the world in which all sides to a conflict have equal justification. - Contradicts the main idea

b) Balanced reporting requires impartially revealing injustices where they occur no less than fairly presenting the views of each party in a conflict. - The main idea of the argument

c) Our experience of life shows that there are indeed cases in which conflicts arise because of an injustice, with one party clearly in the wrong. - Out of scope, as the argument discusses around reporting the injustice in balanced way, rather than what gives rise to injustice.

d) Common sense tells us that balance is especially needed when reporting the background of civil wars and conflicts. - This is only a fraction of the main idea.

e) Balanced reporting is an ideal that cannot be realized, because judgments of balance are necessarily subjective. - The argument clearly states how balance reporting should be done in contrary to just make it look justified, so this is not correct.

Re: Balance is particularly important when reporting the background of ci [#permalink]
Why not A? "If all the media were to adopt such a perverse interpretation of balanced reporting, the public would be given a picture of a world where each party in every conflict had an equal measure of justice on its side" clearly indicates that balanced reporting would present the public with a picture of the world in which all sides to a conflict have equal justification.
Please help. Thanks!

A is incorrect because we are told that balanced reporting should report each side fairly but should not make things up (conceal the truth).

Option A takes the balanced reporting to the extreme (world where each conflict has equal justification). But in the prompt it is stated that such interpretation is wrong (perverse).

KarishmaB - Can you pls explain how option B is the correct answer ?

My understanding of the passage -
Author is suggesting not to manipulate facts and not to present only fair views of both the parties during a civil war and conflicts, and the concept of balance don't justify hiding injustices in order to even while presenting both the parties fairly.

Then Author concludes that if all the party follows this process then world will be presented a view that is opposite of the actual view.

Balance is particularly important when reporting the background of civil wars and conflicts. Facts must not be deliberately manipulated to show one party in a favorable light, and the views of each side should be fairly represented. This concept of balance, however, does not justify concealing or glossing over basic injustices in an effort to be even-handed. If all the media were to adopt such a perverse interpretation of balanced reporting, the public would be given a picture of a world where each party in every conflict had an equal measure of justice on its side, contrary to our experience of life and, indeed, our common
sense.

Which one of the following best expresses the main point of the argument?

a) Balanced reporting presents the public with a picture of the world in which all sides to a conflict have equal justification.

b) Balanced reporting requires impartially revealing injustices where they occur no less than fairly presenting the views of each party in a conflict.

c) Our experience of life shows that there are indeed cases in which conflicts arise because of an injustice, with one party clearly in the wrong.

d) Common sense tells us that balance is especially needed when reporting the background of civil wars and conflicts.

e) Balanced reporting is an ideal that cannot be realized, because judgments of balance are necessarily subjective.

The argument tells us that balanced reporting is important. That views of each party must be fairly represented. (Don't twist facts to be in favour of one and against another)
However, in an effort to be fair, don't conceal injustices done by one party (to try to be "fair" to them).
If media were to use such definitions of balance reporting, they would show each party in a conflict being equally right (but we know that doesn't happen).

So the main point is that balanced reporting needs fair representation of both parties as well as revealing injustices done by any one party.

b) Balanced reporting requires impartially revealing injustices where they occur no less than fairly presenting the views of each party in a conflict.
