Conclusion :-Banning cigarette advertisements in the mass media will not reduce the number of young people who smoke.

A- Seeing or hearing an advertisement for a product tends to increase people’s desire for that product. -> weakens the conclusion

If advertisements are stopped then people desire will decrease i.e. people will buy less and number of young people who smoke will decrease

E also weakens the argument and i am confused between A and E. I will go with A

Conclusion: Ban doesnot help reduce smoking

The heart of argument is - increase in desire for the product due to the advertisement. Hence we have to look for similar answer choice.

(A) Seeing or hearing an advertisement for a product tends to increase people’s desire for that product.
-- Since if the advertisements still continue, it will increase people's desire. Hence the author's conclusion of banning cigarette advertisements won't affect is wrong.Hence A is correct answer choice.

-- Irrelevant. Hence not a correct answer choice.

(C) Advertisements in the mass media have been an exceedingly large part of the expenditures of the tobacco companies.
-- Irrelevant. Hence not a correct answer choice.

(D) Those who oppose cigarette use have advertised against it in the mass media ever since cigarettes were found to be harmful.
-- Irrelevant. Hence not a correct answer choice.

(E) Older people tend to be less influenced by mass-media advertisements than younger people tend to be.
-- This answer choice is like a shell game. But word 'influence' is more generic. Argument is more towards increased desire for the product. Hence cannot be a correct answer choice.

Picked A as well - by elimination. The statement "They do not need the advertisements to supply that information." made me expect to find a choice where they say some sort of info is linked to advertisement. But A targets the number of smokers - so A it is.

(B) Banning cigarette advertisements in the mass media will cause an increase in advertisements in places where cigarettes are sold.--strengthen-therefore banning will not reduce the number of young people who smoke
(C) Advertisements in the mass media have been an exceedingly large part of the expenditures of the tobacco companies.-Out of scope--the topic is about youth and influence of advertisement
