^ E ^

(A) Based on accounts of various ancient writers ---> "based" creates a passive meaning here as if "scholars are based"

(B) Basing it on various ancient writers’ accounts ---> what is "it" ?

(C) With accounts of various ancient writers used for a basis ---> we need the thing done after this phrase not the subject "scholars"

(D) By the accounts of various ancient writers they used --->"by" is not correct. "they" is ambigous

(E) Using accounts of various ancient writers ---> Correct. "scholars using..." correct modifier

Definite E!

What modifies the "scholars"?

(A): Does not modify scholars
(B): Unclear to what does "it" refers to
(C): Just akwards sentence structure to me, + did not modify "scholars"
(D): Same reason as (A)
