First thing's first: what is being tested. modifier. What is the subject? "Scholars"

OK, now find the phrase that best modifies what scholars are doing.

Given this info, I would pick E b/c it says scholars are using accounts from various ancient writers to paint...etc.

Also, A seems to suggest that " scholars are based on accounts "
