use of 'such as' narrows choices to A and B.

A is wrong since it conveys the meaning that scientist are based on X and Y.
B is clear

To site examples "such as" to be used.
So C, D and E are eliminated.
"Based on" is not correct (arjsingh1976 has mentioned the reason)
So B.
