Let M = cost of ordinary mobile
Let C = cost of the cover
Let S = cost of smart mobile

Jhon bought an ordinary mobile and a cover for $ 2000
We get: M + C = 2000

Prince bought a smart phone and the same cover for $ 2000 more than what Jhon had paid.
We get: S + C = 4000

The price of the cover was one tenth of the combined cost of 2 mobiles. what is the cost of the ordinary mobile?
We get: C = 1/10(M + S)
Multiply both sides by 10 to get: 10C = M + S

Lots of options from here. Here's one approach:
Take:
M + C = 2000
S + C = 4000

ADD them to get: M + S + 2C = 6000
Replace M + S with 10C to get: 10C + 2C = 6000
Simplify: 12C = 6000
Solve: C = 6000/12 = 500

We already know that M + C = 2000
Since C = 500, we can see that M = 1500

Answer: C

Let the cost of the ordinary mobile be m, cost of the cover be c and the cost of the smart mobile be s.

=> m + c = 2000......(i)
and s + c = 4000......(ii)
Also, c = (s + m)/10......(iii)

Putting (iii) in (i) and (ii), we get
11m + s = 20,000
m + 11s = 40,000

Adding the two equations above, we get 12(m + s) = 60,000
=> m + s = 5,000
=> c = 5,000/10 = 500

If c = 500, then m = 1500.


The answer is (C).

s+c=4000-----(2)
And,m+s=10c
(1)+(2)
m+c+s+c=2000+4000
=>m+s+2c=6000
=>10c+2c=6000
=>12c=6000
=>c=500
So,cost of mobile =2000-500=1500(Ans)

The following part of the question is poorly written: "The price of the cover was one tenth of the combined cost of 2 mobiles."
It is not clear which mobile we are referring to (Is it an ordinary mobile or a smart phone?). Your solution assumes that it is referring to an ordinary mobile and a smart phone but the question seems to suggest that it is referring to 2 mobiles. Could you please explain? Regards.

When you say that "the price of the cover was one tenth the combined cost of 2 mobiles", which mobiles are we referring to? Are we referring to one ordinary mobile and a smart phone or 2 ordinary mobiles. Thanks in advance for your clarification.

Yeah, I think the question is too ambiguous to be an official GMAT question.

Let $Price of Ordinary Mobile = A

Let $Price of Smartphone = S

Let $Price of Cover = C


Jhon:

A + C = $2,000


Prince:

S + C = $4,000


Price of the Cover:

C = (1/10) * (A + S) ----- (Equation 1)



(1st)
A + C = 2,000
S + C = 4,000
____________
A + S + 2C = 6,000

A + S = 6,000 - 2C ------ Substitute into Equation 1


C = (1/10) * (A + S)

C = (1/10) * (6,000 - 2C)

10C = 6,000 - 2C
12C = 6,000
C = $500


If cost of the Cover = C = $500

then the Cost of the Ordinary Phone = A = $1,500
