I think their refers to Monroe. Use of their is wrong. Pronoun error. So A, B,D out. E has meaning error. Answer should be C.

I checked A.

Sentence means

Because her mother was unable to support a family :- sen begins with providing a reason,
MM spent first.....................with a couple :- correct

issue is analyzing the relative pronoun clause. :who....

couple who became foster parents to supplement ( in order to supplement ) their income.
C states that couple became foster parents in order to supplement Marlyns income. it not only changes meaning, infact add another parameter to sentence which was not stated before.

Lets c whether its C.

B, D, E out because she spent 7 years of her life.
Between A and C, I choose C as her income was supplemented.

I believe the correct answer is A. In C you changes the meaning of the sentence. In A, the couple became foster parents to get paid, however in C it reads as though the couple became foster parents so that Marilyn would be paid

I agree, I marked C at first and then changed my mind to A; Marlyn's income sounds odd to me, "their income" refers to the income of the family... additionally, the word "supplement" means supplementing already existing income which is, of course, the income of the family not Marlin

So I sort of looked up 'foster parents' actually for this,as being non-native, I didn't really get the exact meaning. Essentially, foster parents get a small income to take in or support a child. Keeping that in mind, A was the right answer.

Because her mother was unable to support a family, Marilyn Monroe spent the first seven years of her life with a couple who became foster parents to supplement their income.

(A) her life with a couple who became foster parents to supplement their income - CORRECT. No error in grammar or meaning
(B) their life with a couple who became foster parents to supplement their income- Marilyn is one person, not many. Their is wrong.
(C) her life with a couple who became foster parents to supplement Marilyn's income - WRONG
(D) her mother's life with a couple who became foster parents to supplement their income - meaningless, she can't spend her mother's life.
(E) her child's life with a couple who became foster parents to supplement the couple's income - WRONG

Also, is this a 700 level question?

We have cause and effect. All SV pairs are in place and agrees in number.

No ambiguous pronouns:
her-her-Marilyn Monroe
who-their-couple

First ‘her’ plays the role of adjective that modifies parents - starts the DC, after the comma we need antecedent for ‘her’ - subject of the IC is Marilyn Monroe, so ‘her’ unambiguously refers to Marilyn.

Second ‘her’ adjective that modifies ‘life’ - Marilyn Spent the first seven years of her life with - so Marilyn cannot spent somebody else’s life, unless this is not the intended meaning, second ‘her’ also unambiguously refers to Marilyn.

Who - modifies only people - couple - in this sentence implies two people - who refers to couple no ambiguity.

their - plural - foster parents - couple - plural

Sentence correct as written, let's see other answer choices.

POE

'her life' vs' 'their life' - we know that Marilyne spent her life, so (B), (D) and (E) are out.

(B) their life with a couple who became foster parents to supplement their income
(D) her mother's life with a couple who became foster parents to supplement their income
(E) her child's life with a couple who became foster parents to supplement the couple's income

Both (A) and (C) are grammatically correct, so we have to rely on intended meaing, if there were any gap in (A) we would fix it.

(C) her life with a couple who became foster parents to supplement Marilyn's income

The main difference in (C) 'Marilyn's income'
'Marilyn's income' vs their - couple's income

Meaning:
Marilyn Spent the first seven years of her life with a couple who became foster parents to supplement Marilyn's income.
How this is possible, Marilyn 7 eays old girl, how she can support her foster parents with any income?

So (A) is preferable and sounds reasonable in comparison with (C).

(A) her life with a couple who became foster parents to supplement their income

A is answer.

It's a very nice question.
At first I went for C and got it wrong.
Later realise that in A their refers to Marlyn and her mother.
(Couple supporting its(not their) income is illogical)

Ayush1692 wonderful point

it is also sounds quite weird to me that 'their' refers to couple, but as you said their 'Marilyn and her mother' is also plural, and this makes perfect sence

different points of views is always helpful

but in the original sentence we don't have exact, clear 'Marilyn and her mother' construction

Because her mother was unable to support a family, Marilyn Monroe spent the first seven years of her life with a couple who became foster parents to supplement their income.

so I'm not qiute sure that 'their' refers to 'Marilyn and her mother' - but by meaning is logical and reasonable

but official explanation from PwoerScore says that 'their' refers to 'couple' also... it seems strange to me...

Intent: Because X's mother was unable to support family
X spent her initial years with a family
Now that family(couple) became foster parents to X.
Because they wanted to supplement their income

Lets attack now
(A) her life with a couple who became foster parents to supplement their income
Correctly matches our intent

(B) their life with a couple who became foster parents to supplement their income
Incorrect intent, it should be X's life(singular)

(C) her life with a couple who became foster parents to supplement Marilyn's income
Not the intent, it was not X's income

(D) her mother's life with a couple who became foster parents to supplement their income
Irrelevant

(E) her child's life with a couple who became foster parents to supplement the couple's income
It was not for X's child, it was for X

Official Explanation:
The sentence is grammatically correct. All of the pronouns have clear antecedents: both hers refer to
Marilyn, who refers to the couple, and their refers to the couple
