(A) less of certain pollutants than the burning of gasoline or diesel fuel
less for noncountable, polluntants is countable, therefore wrong!
(B) fewer of certain pollutants than burning gasoline or diesel fuel do
incorrect comparison
(C) less of certain pollutants than gasoline or diesel fuel
less for noncountable, polluntants is countable, therefore wrong!
(D) fewer of certain pollutants than does burning gasoline or diesel fuel
fewer pollutants is correct, correct comparison '...vehicles emit less X than Y or Z does.' Correct answer!
(E) less of certain pollutants than those burning gasoline or diesel fuel
less for noncountable, polluntants is countable, therefore wrong!

First of all, let's sort "less of certain pollutants" out.

fewer pollutants = fewer NUMBER of pollutants. NUMBER is countable
less of certain pollutants = less QUANTITY of certain pollutants. QUANTITY is non-countable
So, B and D are out!

(A) less of certain pollutants than the burning of gasoline or diesel fuel ---> "do those" or equivalent should come before "burning"
(B) fewer of certain pollutants than burning gasoline or diesel fuel do
(C) less of certain pollutants than gasoline or diesel fuel ---> "do those burning" or equivalent should come before "gasoline"

(D) fewer of certain pollutants than does burning gasoline or diesel fuel
(E) less of certain pollutants than those burning gasoline or diesel fuel ---> "do" should come before "those"

According to my analysis, E has the least number of errors.

Anyone disagree with me? Is there anyone who thinks E does not have any error?

E is the answer. Correct comparison between vehicles burning natural gas and those burning petrol or diesel

I would also go for E. The comparison between vehicles is being done.

Also, less of pollutants is correct in my opinion as the pollutants released by both types of vehicles are common to some extent but the quantities are less...

fewer is also right as NG vehicles do not emit NOx.... but themain pollutants in vehicles are CO and CO2.So the comparison is in quantities in my opinion!

It is E.
Vehicles are being compared with "those".
Without those you are comparing vehicles to gas

I am still confused why we use less of of certain pollutants.

pollutants is countable. 1 pollutant, 2 pollutants, 3 pollutants...etc. pollution is not countable.
there were fewer cars on the road, which has led to less pollution.
cars is countable, pollution is not.

nevermind. i figured it out.

less is used in cases of fractions or subsets/groups.

fewer pollutants
less of (a group) pollutants

less pollution

i retract that

===============
countable = pollutants
uncountable = pollution

we use fewer with countable nouns
there are fewer pollutants in the air.

we do NOT use fewer in this case because CERTAIN pollutants cannot be counted.

So i go for E

is this logic correct?

[Reveal] Spoiler:
I know choice B is wrong because of Incorrect usage of 'fewer', however i would like to know that when comparing the actions if the second part to be compared repeats the verb - do in this case - can that or those be understood in such case.
i.e. if the choice B had been less of certain pollutants than (those) burning gasoline or diesel fuel do would this choice be correct?

Your query: I know choice B is wrong because of Incorrect usage of 'fewer', however i would like to know that when comparing the actions if the second part to be compared repeats the verb - do in this case - can that or those be understood in such case.

Vehicles powered by natural gas emit less of certain pollutants than (those?) burning gasoline or diesel fuel do
-- "Those" is required in above comparison, otherwise it will appear that "vehicles" are being compared with "burning of fuel".

E

A simple trick to remembering whether to use "less" or "fewer" is to remember the sentence "If you eat fewer fries, you need less ketchup." You can count the fries (one fry, two fries, three fries, etc.), so you use the word "fewer". You cannot count ketchup (you cannot say one ketchup or two ketchup), so you use "less". Because of this B and D are eliminated.

A is incorrect because the sentence is trying to say the vehicles burning one fuel emit less pollutants than other vehicles burning another fuel. A is comparing the vehicles to the general burning of fuel, which distorts the meaning.

C is similar to A. C compares the vehicles to the fuels themselves.

I hope that helps

OA for this one? I go with E, was to be less because pollutants are uncountable.
Furthermore, we are comparing vehicles here so we need 'those' (vehicles) burning gas or diesel fuel

Hence IMHO answer should be (E)

Let us know!
Thanks

less pollutants
or
fewer pollutants

I totally disagree with the OA, because we can not compare car powered by vs burning of, this question are comparing two different things.
