Which of these is correct and why?

It seems likely that a number of astronomical phenomea, such as the formation of planetary nebulas,are because of the interaction of two stars orbiting each other.

I believe caused by is preferred usage. There is nothing wrong with bothe the sentence grammatically.

caused by clearly relates cause and effect.

The second choice makes the sentence passive voice.
