answer E - subjunctive mood
in addition, "difference between" (E) is idiomatic over "difference in" (C)

since this is talking about a hypothetical situation, (the diver isn't really performing the action), this is subjunctive mood so we cannot use the regular infinitive. therefore, ascends is incorrect.

the tip off for me was "essential that" in the beginning

It is ESSENTIAL THAT (Indicates a subjunctive mood is about to come) a diver (returning blah blah) ascend (VERB IN SUBJUNCTIVE MOOD ) ..rest of the sentence.

advice, advisable, ask, arrange,....essential, fitting, imperative, important, insist, necessary,etc....." These words signal the use of subjunctive moood.

Where is the infinitve you talk about though? I couldn't understand. This sentence is clear case of the subjunctive mood.

Sorry .. i mean subjunctive.. that was a typo.. Wht I wanted to make sure was why can't we use ascends as a verb form instead of ascend.. I just wanted to know the diff in using 2 of them ..

E

tough choice Between C and E. I don't like differences In in C and Ascends

Choice E corrects all the errors.

I didn't even notice the subjunctive mood, but here is how I came to the concludsion, and picked E as my answer...

you need "that of the ocean" to make the right comparison, so A and B are out...

"a diver" needs to go with " he" so D is out....

you need "Between....and" so so C is out....

that left me with E....

I could clear up my doubt on why to 'ascend' instead of 'ascends' in option E (subjunctive)..
As the subjunctive mood refers to something that is not real, ascends would signify that the verb is actually happening..
essential that diver ascends .... >> the diver is actually ascending
essential that diver ascend ..... >> It is a wish .. In other words subjunctive is attached to independent clause that uses an adjective to express urgency..

This is E.

Every choice but CE use they to refer to a diver.

C and E, I these sentences are using the subjunctive. Everytime I read it my head kept saying ascend. I wanted to use ascends to refer to the singular diver, but I really think subjunctive is being used here. So i went for E.

Hmm the ocean clearly does not have an "internal" pressure. This is not an official question, is it?

Sayantan, is it+be+adjective a proper subjunctive format (as used in E)? i thought command subjunctives only uses verbs, that too in active form, not passive. Please let me know what I am missing. Thank you.

The verb "is" is not in subjunctive mood. Hence "it be essential" would be incorrect. The verb "ascend" is in subjunctive mood.

She demands that he go there.... correct
Here "demands" is the bossy verb, and it is not in subjunctive. The action that is demanded ("go") is in subjunctive.

Similarly in option E the bossy noun is "essential" - the verb that is essential ("ascend") is in subjunctive mood.

Note: The verb in subjunctive mood may not necessarily go with a bossy verb - it may also go with a bossy noun, as in this case.

It seems as if "that refers to internal pressure. The ocean has internal pressure ..  !?
