To survive is correct so eliminate C, D, and E
"required of whom" to survive? The firms. B is right and clear

Agree with TeHCM. Also, this is a modifier SC split by a phrase.

A,C and D are all out --> all result in 'such firms' at the end of the sentence to have nothing to point to. "such firms'... what type of firms?? We need something to indicate that the firms that are being referred to are those who can pay for the R&D costs.

E is out --> passive is not preferred

B is okay. 'Required of' is idiomatic

I'll go with B, since the subject is missing. We don't know survival of whom. B corrects that. Although E indicates a subject, its idiomatic (if thats a word) is wrong, it should be to survive. Correct me if I am wrong, plz.

Will go with B. The last line mentions such firms. To survive doesnot specifically say who needs to survive. Hence “of firms to surviveâ€

This is a SC from OG 10 as i remember.
...require of something/ somebody to do sth is idiomatic. Thus, B it is.
