(B) of firms to survive

Because of the enormous research and development expenditures required to survive in the electronics industry, an industry marked by rapid innovation and volatile demand, such firms tend to be very large.

The key is "such firms"... with A, C, D there is no backward referring firms to clarify "such firms" which requires some characteristic "of firms" to be described. B does that...

We need to mention ' firms ' in the underlined part as their is a reference to firms in the later part, ' such firms '.
