'it' is incorrectly used. this filters out A, b and E.

D for me too...
A is missing the word 'will',which is necessary here...
B is incorrect because it is comparing an earthquake occuring in the east with western part of US.. this is an improper comparision....
C is incorrect because '100 times the area' sounds more like a noun... 100 times has to modify the area as per the argument...
E is incorrect... 'Here the 'if' clause is in past tense.. thereby the latter clause has to be in 'would+verb' format , which is not seen...

Left with D...

+1 D
A and B has meaning issue also as both the options show the effect of only one earthquake having more impact at place x whereas less impact at place y ....thus word occurrence is necessary to show separate occurrence of earthquakes....
I don't think it is incorrectly used here..IT has a clear antecedent, earthquake, and both are the subjects of parallel clause..
C is wrong comparison and E( If Clause) erroneously uses past tense with future tense and hence incorrect.
