Before the advent of writing each of the isolated clans of the Comaquogue tribe had master storytellers whose function was to orally transmit the clan's tradition from one generation to the next. When writing was developed within certain clans of the tribe, their master storytellers disappeared within a few generations. This stands to reason, since the availability of written records obviated the need for masterful oral communicators to keep the tradition of literate clans alive. What has puzzled anthropologists, however, is the total lack of masterful storytellers in modern illiterate Comaquogue clans.

Which of the following, if true, best helps to explain the puzzling situation mentioned above?

(A) Modern illiterate Comaquogue clan members display personality that resemble their ancestors more closely than they resemble the characteristics of modern literate Comaquogue clan members.
(B) Modern illiterate Comaquogue clans participate in more ritual gatherings than most modern literate Comaquogue clans do, but they participate in fewer ritual gatherings than did their common ancestors.
(C) Modern illiterate Comaquogue clans are recently descended from long-time literate clans that failed to pass on the skills of reading and writing due to a devastating 75-year war.
(D) The celebrations of modern illiterate Comaquogue clans involve a great deal of singing and dancing, and children are taught clan songs and dances from a very young age.
(E) The traditions of modern illiterate Comaquogue clans are an amalgamation of the cumulative experiences of previous generations plus innovations to the heritage added by the current generation of clan members

ANALYZE THE STIMULUS:

Fact: Before the advent of writing each of the isolated clans of the Comaquogue tribe had master storytellers
Fact: because of the availability of written records their master storytellers disappeared within a few generation,
Fact: However, there is a total lack of masterful storytellers in modern illiterate Comaquogue clans.

The assumption is:
The tribes did have their master storytellers before the master story tellers "disappeared". If these tribes did NOT have the master storytellers, how could these master storytellers were “disappeared”? On the other hand, we CAN'T lose something we don't have.

(A) Modern illiterate Comaquogue clan members display personality semble their ancestors more closely than they characteristics that resemble their ancestors more closely than they resemble the characteristics of modern literate Comaquogue clan members.
Wrong. “resemble more closely” does not mean the modern illiterate Comaquogue clan did not need a master storytellers.

(B) Modern illiterate Comaquogue clans participate in more ritual gatherings than most modern literate Comaquogue clans do, but they participate in fewer ritual gatherings than did their common ancestors.
Wrong. Same problem as A. “participate more ritual gathering” does not guarantee the modern illiterate Comaquogue clan did not need a master storytellers. What if they did have a mater storyteller and also participated in more ritual gathering? Hence, B does not help.

(C) Modern illiterate Comaquogue clans are recently descended from long-time literate clans that failed to pass on the skills of reading and writing due to a devastating 75-year war.
Correct. The logic is: Literate clans had master storyteller ==> because of writing the master storytellers “disappeared” ==> The “modern” clans did NOT have a master storyteller anymore ==> The war devastated their writing and made them illiterated. Hence, the modern illiterate clans did not have any master storytellers before they became illiterated.

(D) The celebrations of modern illiterate Comaquogue clans involve a great deal of singing and dancing, and children are taught clan songs and dances from a very young age.
Wrong. Same as A and B, the participating in social activities does NOT guarantee the modern illiterate Comaquogue clan did NOT need a master storytellers.

(E) The traditions of modern illiterate Comaquogue clans are an amalgamation of the cumulative experiences of previous generations plus innovations to the heritage added by the current generation of clan members
Wrong. Same as A, B, and D, the adding of new innovations does NOT guarantee the modern illiterate Comaquogue clan did not need a master storytellers. What if the clans DID have a master storytellers and they also add new innovations to their heritage. Hence, E cannot explain the totally lack of a master storyteller.

Hope it helps.

Option A had severe typographical error. The same has been rectified.

oh god..please please pretty please - format the question so that it would be literate...
i wanted to bang my head against the wall when reading option A...

we have a solve the paradox question.
we are told that where W appeared - no need for Master ST
then we are told that CC - no master ST, but no W as well.

how do we explain?
1. writing was developed, but then - people stopped learning to read/write because of some reasons..
2. they don't have much of the traditions, and people who live - see all the traditions by themselves while living in the tribe.
option C gives a valid reason.
