Before the Civil War, Harriet Tubman, along with other former slaves and white abolitionists, helped create what had become known as the Underground Railroad, and were responsible for leading hundreds, if not thousands, of slaves to freedom.

B would become known as the Underground Railroad, and were
D has been becoming known as the Underground Railroad, and was
E would become known as the Underground Railroad, and was

OA will be posted later. Found this one interesting and intriguing at the same time....

IMO C,

B,D,E Out because of the wrong usage of the verb in the beginning of the sentence (would become, has been, )

Left with A and C , The sentence uses "Harriet along with" which means we need to use singular form here. (Hence WAS instead of WERE )

I got the same answer. But from what they said, it's not ok to use the past tense "had" because there is not more than one action happening here. And thus the OA is E.

I also noticed that it was singular and D just didn't sound right.

E for me.

I believe C and E are the only contenders here. Option C uses pefect tense implying that before the railroad was created it had become known as the Underground railroad. However, the railroad would be known by that name only after it has been created and hence option E.

IMO E,
@tingle15 : Perfect explanation to eliminate C.

E is correct because the sentence is talking about the future in the past tense.

present tense --> Harriet Tubman is helping create what will become known as the Underground Railroad

past tense --> Harriet Tubman helped create what would become known as the Underground Railroad

I got stuck with C and E in this case and selected 'had' over 'would'

A and B out for using 'were' for a singular noun
D out has been becoming that is in the process of becoming odd construction

would become suggests that it will become isn't it.....hmmmmmm

Past perfect implies that thing started before the action that is stated in simple past

eg. I had cleaned the room before he came

I cleaned the room
then
he came

Applying that logic here

the railroad was known as underground network
then
it was created.

Sounds foolish.

It was created.
Then in the future (wrt the creation) it would be known as something...
