But, as per Manhattan SC, "these" has to be accompanied always by a noun (these dogs, these carrots...), and never alone.
Could anybody clarify the correct usage of "these" alone in this sentence? Thanks,

These is the plural of this. These (this) functions as an adjective or pronoun. In choice A, the word "these" is a pronoun. When "these" functions as an adjective, there should be a noun after "these" or "this".

ok, i got it.

And what about morphine's? what does the 's refer to?

Many thanks.

Let me add to my previous post. I don't know if "these" without a noun is acceptable in GMAT world.

Does anyone know the source of the original question? I don't know if the possessive noun "morphine's" is correct.

Could you elaborate on the questions above?
Thanks.

As per my understanding, "these" clearly refers to the sauces and moreover you need "just as".. and not like there

do you think that "they" in B is ambigous?
can it refer to sauces and endorphins?
Endorphins is attached in the construction "the release of endorphins", which is singular, so according to me, "they" can only refer to hot sauces.
could anybody explain this?

Thanks!

My answer is A

"Besides adding complentary flavors to many foods" is supposed to modify hot sauces, so D and E is out.

B- "they" is ambiguous, is it modifying hot sauces or endorphins?
C- same problem

Between A and B, I`ll go with A because of the correct comparison "as" for similiar actions. C, D, and E are out for the wrong modifier.
