Seconding this... Doesn't seem like there are detailed reviews anywhere. Makes me a bit anxious.

Re: "Best" Admissions Consulting Companies - 2016 Season [#permalink]
This feedback is on my MBA admission experience with Alice van Harten and career coaching with David White from Menlo Coaching.

I am originally from Pakistan but based in the UK for last nine years. When I first started to work on my MBA applications, I selected a “famous” US consultant with package rates. I thought it was a good deal, but as I approached the final payments, commitment levels dropped considerably. I was getting little or no feedback and I had no choice but to look elsewhere. I ended up wasting thousands of pounds! Never select a consultant because he/she says you have a good chance to be admitted!

I reached out to Alice to work on applications for Stanford, Harvard, MIT and LBS with only four weeks before the deadlines. Some essays had already been approved by my previous consultant, so I thought that Alice would suggest minor adjustments to the essay and we would be done. To my surprise, she suggested big structural changes to the essays. First, she had me write more about my background and my goals, telling me to forget that you are writing for adcom; just get all your thoughts on the paper. Not many consultants will plough through your four pages of incoherent thoughts, examine each idea and then suggest what to keep and develop further. I believe she cares so much that she is happy to go through the pain of reading everything so we don’t miss on any ideas. Alice makes sure that you don’t miss on any experiences of your life that distinguish you from the rest.

Alice was also helpful with recommenders. I was applying from a non-feeder company, so my recommenders were not familiar with the demands and importance of these letters. Alice handled this smoothly by interviewing the recommenders and helping them to draft the letters.

I was rejected by all four schools, but attribute this to the fact that I was applying from a region of high demand and had an unremarkable GMAT score. I was not disappointed because the work put in on these applications allowed me to create a stellar application for Judge MBA program at Cambridge. I quickly received an invitation and Alice made sure that I was prepared for the interviews by having several practice sessions in the weeks leading up to the visit. I received an offer from Cambridge with £7.5K in bursary! I will be starting my MBA in Sep/16 and it would never have been possible without Alice’s help.

Besides the MBA application, Menlo Coaching also helped me with career coaching. I knew that my salary was lower than the median for my position, and David helped me to create a negotiation strategy that resulted in receiving a 20% raise plus a 10-15% performance related bonus.

Although I am glad that the admission process is over, I will miss talking to a nice and intelligent person who became a friend and mentor during the process!

I didn't manage to get a free consultation with Alice at Menlo Coaching as she is fully booked! Am currently waiting till one slot opens up.

However, she was super helpful with my initial email and queries. I also like how she limits her client number so she can provide the best service to everyone.

I think what's different about Alice vs. other consultants is that she's really genuine about helping candidates getting into their target schools. She also comes across as very trustworthy. She has great knowledge on the MBA schools. Not to mention her prior experiences as a strategy consultant at Bain and PhD from Cambridge....

One advice though, book early!

Top 15 admit - August Academy

When I first contacted Karthik, I had not yet given my GMAT. He evaluated my profile, helped me identify my strengths and weaknesses and motivated me to do well on the GMAT. He even suggested how to prepare for the GMAT.

When I was playing safe with the selection of universities, Karthik encouraged me to apply for the bigger ones. I applied to 10 universities – 5 in R1 and 5 in R2. After I received admits from 4 universities in R1, I was happy about it and content. He asked me to apply to bigger universities

I got interview invites from 8 universities and admits from 5.

I will be joining a Top 15 ranked university this Fall. Thanks to Karthik for motivating me to aim higher.

Before I started writing essays, he told me how to contact current students and alumni of the schools I was applying to and get vital information which will help me in my essays. After I had an idea of what to write in my essay, Karthik would help me structure my thoughts in a coherent way. And I was free to schedule an appointment to discuss about my essays until it was perfect. He did not limit me to the number of calls or hours as some consultants do.

I found the discussions with Karthik to be more productive when I did some research on the school and made a rough structure for the essays.

After attending 8 interviews, I can safely say I have become a pro at MBA Admission interviews. Karthik corrected my delivery style and taught me how to make proper eye contact with the interviewer.

Karthik does more than what is expected of him. He motivates you to aim higher when you are content with the status quo. I would strongly recommend Karthik – August Academy to future MBA aspirants.

I have had a very good experience with Experts Global ( https://www.expertsglobal.com/ )both during GMAT prep and MBA consulting. They are a small dedicated and professional team committed to the students. My journey began in May / June 2014 when I signed up for their online GMAT prep. I had a customized schedule involving daily targets and weekend doubt solving sessions over skype. The mentors were very accommodating especially when i was facing trouble in a specific topic they would schedule a specific session just for me.
The biggest thing that i received from EG was the support - I gave first attempt in October 2014 and scored 660 (that happened because i was suffering from Dengu at that time). Though discouraged and crestfallen, i reached out to experts with my score. They sat with me, understood the pain points and devised a new schedule to take another crack at GMAT. I preped with a tweaked strategy for another one and half month and gave GMAT early December 2014 to score a 740.

This was the time I could have applied to most of the schools in R3 and R3 but i had some apprehensions. I wanted to apply in R1 to take the most advantage of scholarship and strengthen my resume by adding another year of work and save some more money. I remember having lengthy discussions with my mentor on pro and cons of the decision that i had to make and eventually i decided to apply in 2015 for fall 2016.

From Jan 2015 - May 2015 was the period when i researched and experimented a lot with the questions of Why MBA, in which concentration etc. What i loved about my mentors was the discussions that i used have with him during this time. He helped me analyze different perspectives. Above anything else, this was the time i felt my understanding and my decision to really mature about why i want to do an MBA in first place.

We did not jump on to essay questions directly, rather i filled up an exhaustive questionnaire that discussed everything - from my motivation to do mba to my inspiration and experience. Then i worked with my mentor to create an outline of my profile which is aligned with my career aspiration and my reason to do an mba. Once this was set, essays did not seem too difficult to handle. My mentor did review my essays but the most valuable input came in the form of understanding the requirements, strengths of the school and molding my essays accordingly.

I underwent 5-6 mock interviews before I started to appear for the interviews and the feedback i received during the mock helped my greatly in maximizing my performance in the interviews.

Eventually i got in Wisconsin Madison, Purdue Krannert and Boston Uni - Questrom with full scholarship, Rotaman and Olin with Partial scholarship and Marshall and ISB with no scholarship.

If I were to name what makes EG good is the time and energy they are willing to invest in their students. Furthermore they don't shy away from being harsh and blunt at times if they see a student is losing the focus. For me the entire experience with EG was fantastic and i would recommend their services strongly.

In case you have any questions, queries or just want to discuss - message me at pradeepbhatt4188@gmail.com

cheers and all the best

I reached out to Alice Van Harten at Menlo Coaching (https://menlocoaching.com/) in the spring before applying to MBA programs, with very little knowledge of the process. My non-profit background meant I had few friends of colleagues to guide me, but Alice's support led me to the school of my dreams, Columbia.

I have to be honest that our introductory call didn’t give me the answers I wanted to hear – Alice was the only admissions consultant who was honest enough to tell me that my GMAT score wasn’t be good enough for my top choice schools. But after I took the time to retake and get a more competitive score, I knew working with her would be well worth the investment.

Her knowledge and experience was immediately obvious during the introductory call, when she quickly plotted out a potential strategy to leverage my background. Her help started with school selection and still continues even after my acceptance. From school selection, to essays, and to recommender selection, Alice's advice was both honest and helpful.

The most valuable experience was the mock interviews I completed with her in preparation for interviews at my top and 2nd choice. The extensive prep work she provided and the thorough interviews helped me feel at ease while pushing me to make sure I was 100% prepared. In the end I am going to the school I dreamed of, and it wouldn't have been possible without her support along the way.

When doing my initial search for an admissions consultant, I was first drawn to the big-name consulting companies. Yet, after doing more research I realized that I did not merely want to be another faceless customer at one of these big firms. I knew that I needed the personalized support that Scott @ Personal MBA Coach provides in order to get through the application process in one piece. The whole application process, from b-school research to essay writing, is intensive, time-consuming, and stressful. I highly recommend Scott as the person ripe for the job to get you through it—with success. Truth be told, Scott gets into the minutiae of the entire application, including the 50 character explanations for my ECs in your undergraduate studies. From countless essay edits to much-needed mock interviews, Scott was there for me at every step.

Scott’s one-on-one support is exactly what I needed to conquer this arduous process and engineer an admission to my dream school of Columbia.

Hi Neharika,
We have consultants who are graduates from one year programs such as ISB, INSEAD, HEC etc who have gone through the rigour themselves as well as have consulted for MBA admissions for several years with great success. You can check out their profiles here and see if any of our consultants match your requirements. You can book an initial free session before making a decision. Good luck with your applications.

I would like to recommend EXPERTS GLOBAL if you are looking for an INDIA based admissions consultant.

My association with experts global began when i was scouting for a GMAT Mock test package. They have a Killer deal of 15 Full-length tests for INR2000.
There test series was a close emulation of the GMAC tests and my actual score at GMAT was in line with the test series.

With a good experience in the Test package, i went on to take up their admissions consulting service as well.
The team is very cooperative and have a sense of responsibility and accountability over your deadlines and needs which i found was missing with other consultants.
They even went out of the way to support my plans.

They provide you with an dedicated Mentor who are well qualified and take personal interest over your needs.
school shortlisting incorporates your goals, future aspirations and also your financial capacity which many miss out.
You are given exclusive hand holding throughout the application process with personal involvement in school shortlisting/ Essay preparation/Essay & Application reviews / mock interviews/ Mock Visa interviews/ finance options and VISA processing.

The team puts a lot of effort to understand you as a persona and your needs before helping you with quality essays.
The team is a specialist when it comes to Scholarship planning. I had applied to 6 universities with their help and landed an admit with 3 TOP universities with the HIGHEST SCHOLARSHIP in each school. Ex: Michigan State University - Broad had awarded me with a $47000 scholarship
McGill university - Canada with a $16000 scholorship. Results from the remaining schools are still awaited.

The team is also flexible and friendly and help you with minor details whenever needed. There were no hiccups even though i worked with the team remotely through mails and phone calls, as they were based in Noida and i am from chennai. they have a well established network and have placed a lot of students in US colleges which would help you in getting to the actual scenario there after your admission from a student's perspective which is an added bonus.

Overall the experience was Great. When you have a team that takes accountability of your success it makes you feel a lot more confident and changes your perspective about your decision to do an MBA. I would strongly recommend Experts Global for anyone looking for a dedicated & Professional admission consulting from India.
