I have been studying for the GMAT for approximately 2 months now, with a month and a half left remaining before I plan to take the exam. I started my prep using Veritas' new ORION software, completed it in just over a month, then switched to using the OG, GMATPrep Question Pack 1, and free exams for practice with the adaptive algorithm and time constraints.

My target score is 750 and my score progression over time has been as follows:

05/13/2018 Diagnostic Test (Veritas) - 610, Q37, V37
06/02/2018 Practice CAT 1 (Veritas) - 650, Q42, V37
06/17/2018 Practice CAT 2 (Veritas) - 670, Q46, V36
07/02/2018 Practice CAT 3 (Veritas) - 700, Q44, V43
07/12/2018 GMATPrep Exam 1 - 740, Q46, V46

Right now, I feel very strong in the verbal section, getting only a few questions wrong throughout the section and finishing with ample time. To be honest, I'm not sure how I could better use the remaining 10 minutes I typically have at the end of the verbal section.

However, quantitative still feels very challenging for me. I have difficulty with speed while minimizing careless errors and sometimes simply lack content knowledge. In many cases, I solve the quantitative problems more logically than mathematically, which seems to be a crutch as it takes longer. Interestingly, based on the Veritas CATs, I perform much better on Data Sufficiency questions (~85% accuracy) vs. Problem Solving (~55%).

In general, I view improving my quantitative section as a huge opportunity for me to increase my score. If I can increase it from around Q46 to Q49 while maintaining my verbal performance, I could consistently be punching above my 750 goal and into 770 territory.

I would appreciate any advice and recommendations on the best way to spend my last month and a half of prep to improve my quantitative score. I recently heard about Target GMAT for relatively affordable targeted quantitative prep.

Hi

derekgibbs96, glad to see that you found ORION helpful. I love that steady growth in your CAT scores - 610 to 740 in two months is awesome!

Would you mind sharing more about your overall experience with ORION in the month that you used it? I'm happy to hop on a quick phone call whenever convenient for you.

Hi derekgibbs96,

I’m glad you reached out, and I’m happy to help. The good news is that a Q46 is a fantastic place to be. At the same time, as I’m sure you are aware, you will need to put in a lot of effort and time to improve to a Q49 score.

To increase your quant score to a higher level, you have to go through GMAT quant carefully to find your exact weaknesses, fill gaps in your knowledge, and strengthen your skills. The overall process will be to learn all about how to answer question types with which you currently aren't very comfortable and do dozens of practice questions category by category, basically driving up your score point by point. When you do dozens of questions of the same type one after the other, you learn just what it takes to get questions of that type correct consistently. If you aren't getting close to 90 percent of questions of a certain type correct, go back and seek to better understand how that type of question works, and then do more questions of that type until you get to at least around 90 percent accuracy in your training. If you get 100 percent of some sets correct, even better.

For example, if you find that you are not strong in answering Number Properties questions, carefully review the conceptual underpinnings of how to answer Number Properties questions and practice by answering 50 or more questions just from Number Properties: LCM, GCF, units digit patterns, divisibility, remainders, etc. As you do such practice, do a thorough analysis of each question that you don't get right. If you get a remainder question wrong, ask yourself why you got it wrong. Did you make a careless mistake? Did you not properly apply the remainder formula? Was there a concept you did not understand in the question? By carefully analyzing your mistakes, you will be able to efficiently fix your weaknesses and in turn improve your GMAT quant skills. Number Properties is just one example; follow this process for all quant topics.

Each time you strengthen your understanding of a topic and your skill in answering questions of a particular type, you increase your odds of hitting your score goal. You know that there are types of questions that you are happy to see and types that you would rather not see, and types of questions that you take a long time to answer correctly. Learn to more effectively answer the types of questions that you would rather not see, and make them into your favorite types. Learn to correctly answer in two minutes or less questions that you currently take five minutes to answer. By finding, say, a dozen weaker quant areas and turning them into strong areas, you will make great progress toward hitting your quant score goal. If a dozen areas turn out not to be enough, strengthen some more areas.

So, work on accuracy and generally finding correct answers, work on specific weaker areas one by one to make them strong areas, and when you take a practice GMAT or the real thing, take all the time per question available to do your absolute best to get right answers consistently. The GMAT is essentially a game of seeing how many right answers you can get in the time allotted. Approach the test with that conception in mind, and focus intently on the question in front of you with one goal in mind: getting a CORRECT answer.

In order to follow the path described above, you may need some new quant materials. I see you’ve heard of Target Test Prep. Our course has helped thousands of students achieve a 49+ GMAT quant score, so if you’d like to improve your GMAT quant score, I recommend that you use TTP.
